Brother DCP-1400 Review
When Brother introduced the DCP-1400 laser multi-function in 2001, they added just about everything any small business will ever need in a 3-in-1. A combination monochrome laser printer, scanner, and copier, the USB multi-function prints at 600 x 600 dpi, at 12 ppm.
If you don’t want to turn on the computer every time you want to make a copy, or a fax, you don’t have to. The DCP-1400 has a full control panel with an on-screen menu for printer setup and full operation without the need for software. The 35-pound DCP-1400 has a footprint of 19.4” x 18”. The automatic top-loading document feeder allows for 50 single-sided originals up to Legal size to be scanned or copied.
The Brother DCP-1400 can hold up to 250 sheets of letter-sized or legal-size paper up from 16 to 28 pounds paper weight. A multi-purpose slot handles envelopes, transparencies and heavier paperweights up to 43#. A second 250-sheet cassette is available as an option to double paper capacity.
While PC’s with a parallel interface are becoming few and far between with the increase of USB devices, it’s nice to free up a USB port if your computer still has a parallel interface. The DCP-1400 gives you that choice with USB and Parallel connectivity.
After a 25 second warm-up period, there’s an additional 15 second delay between each print job. Having a maximum resolution of 600 dpi, the Brother prints monochrome text and graphics at speeds up to 12 pages per minute. Brother includes HP PCL4 print emulation for the DCP.
While prints and copies are in B & W, the DCP-1400 can scan in straight black-and-white, 256 grayscale or in 24-bit color. The optical resolution is 600 x 1,200 dpi, and can be digitally interpolated up to 9,600 x 9,600 dpi. The scanning feature has software support for TWAIN protocols.
The DCP-1400 has an 8.5” x 11.7” flatbed platen to scan A4 or Letter-size originals. The top-loading Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) allows for 50 single-sided originals up to 8 ½” x 14”. The Brother DCP-1400 can make up to 99 copies at the rate of 12 monochrome pages per minute. Copy magnification ranges from 25% to 400% in 1% increments or in 14 “jumps”. Copy exposures can be set either manually, automatic adjustment of contrast, text or photo modes.
Brother equipped the DCP-1400 with 8MB of fixed memory, which can handle most single print jobs. Practically silent in Standby, the multi-function produces 53dB of noise during power, wakeup, and printing.
The DCP-1400 really shows its age in its speed. While pretty impressive in 2001, 15 ppm for a monochrome laser is pretty slow compared to newer laser and color inkjet printers.
This multi-function has the capability of being a nice shared printer across several computers if it wasn’t for the limited amount of memory. 8MB is pretty slim for a multi-function of this size, and Brother didn’t bother to add an expansion slot for adding more RAM.
