Brother DCP-8045D Review
The Brother DCP-8045D is an electrophotographic all-in-one laser printer with built-in copy and scan functions, but the printer shows its age in several crucial categories, such as print speed and memory capacity. While it would likely function fine in some current applications, it's difficult to wholly recommend for purchase now, several years after being discontinued, for much beyond home and home office use, though workgroup environments likely would have struggled with its low paper capacity and throughput.
The printer is a remarkably compact 39.9 lbs and measures 18.8" by 21.3" by 17.8", making it very easy to put alongside other equipment on a previously installed piece of furniture or on its own desk or table, if desired. Like few multifunction printers this model can be easily transported given its very light weight. The printer produces pages at a maximum speed of 21 pages per minute and at a maximum resolution of 2400 by 600 dpi, which should be more than adequate for a home user and perhaps a home office user, as it is consistent with the standard 20 pages per minute offered by most black laser printers (but not as fast as newer workgroup systems, which offer speeds of 40-60 pages per minute regularly).
The printer has duplex printing and copying support, making it easy to produce dual-sided documents.
The copier functions on this printer do not require a PC to function. They can perform up to 99 copies simultaneously and perform reductions and enlargements between 25% and 400%.
The color scanner built into the printer can perform scans at up to 9600 by 9600 dpi on documents sized up to 8.5" by 14".
To ensure compatibility with legacy systems and perhaps with DOS applications, the system includes emulation support for PostScript 3, EPSON FX, PCL 6, and IBM Proprinter XL printing languages, making it relatively easy to produce documents regardless of your operating system or requirements.
The printer has a maximum media capacity of 550 sheets split between a lower paper tray, a second paper tray, and a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray, making it likely more than adequate for the home office user (or perhaps even a small office). The printer also features a 50 document automatic document feeder, allowing for large copying and scanning jobs to be completely relatively quickly.
The printer can print to envelopes, transparencies, labels, plain paper, bond paper, and recycled paper, as well as to media sized Letter A, Legal, Executive, A4, A5, B5, and B6.
The printer includes a 3-color LED capable of displaying toner, drum and paper status and Go and Job Cancel buttons for limited manual control.
On Windows systems, the printer's drivers allow for extended function such as N-up printing (which will condense up to 25 pages onto a single sheet of paper), poster printing (which extends one page onto up to 25 pages), and watermarked printing. It also supports booklet printing.
The printer offers support for Microsoft operating systems from DOS and Windows 9X onward, as well as for Mac OS 8.6 onward and Mac OS X from 10.1 onward, as well as Linux support.
The printer can only be connected to systems via USB or through the IEEE-1284 parallel port, requiring that you acquire an additional expansion unit to add 10/100Base-TX networking to the printer.
The printer ships with 32MB of RAM, expandable to 80MB if necessary. Newer models can be expanded well beyond this, though home users may not be frustrated by the speed with which this printer produces documents normally. Unlike other, newer home office solutions, printing via wireless or Bluetooth, or from portable devices, is not easily available. |
