Brother DCP-8060 Review
The Brother DCP-8060 is a multifunction laser printer also featuring copy and scan functions. In its remarkably compact package it offers a strong, comprehensive feature set, making it quite attractive for home office users who need a lot from a device with a small footprint. Small offices may be interested in it as well, but its relatively small paper capacity could prove too frustrating.
The printer measures 20.9" by 17.7" by 18.7" and weighs 35.5 lbs, making it much smaller than many workgroup printers (though heavier than consumer inkjets, which are extremely lightweight). It can be easily fit on a desk or table alongside other equipment, or placed on its own piece of furniture if desired, such as a credenza.
The printer produces documents at a speed of up to 30 pages per minute, well over the standard 20 pages per minute offered by most printers like this one (though slower than the fastest workgroup printers, which offer speeds well over 50 pages per minute).
The printer produces documents at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 1200 dpi. It also supports Windows' GDI driver and PCL 6 and BR-script 3 emulation if needed to print from certain platforms.
The built-in copier also processes documents at a maximum speed of 30 pages per minute, but is limited to a maximum resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi. It can perform enlargements up to 400% and reductions as low as 25% and produces a maximum number of 99 copies at a time.
The built-in scanner functions process documents at a maximum optical resolution of 600 by 2400 dpi and a maximum interpolated resolution of 19200 by 19200 dpi. It has a maximum gray scale depth of 8 bits and a maximum color depth of 24 bits.
The printer processes a minimum document size of 5.8" by 5.8" and a maximum original document size of 8.5" by 14". Its minimum copy size is 2.75" and 4.6" and its maximum is 8.5" by 16". The printer supports printing to labels, transparencies, and to plain paper.
The printer has a standard media capacity of 300 sheets. It also has a 50 sheet bypass feeder and a 150 sheet output tray, as well as a 50 sheet document feeder. The input tray can process paper weighted between 60 and 105 grams per square meter; the bypass tray can handle between 60 and 161.
The printer includes drivers for Windows 98 onward as well as Mac OS from 9.1 onward (Mac OS X is supported from 10.2.4 and drivers should be preinstalled with newer versions of Mac OS X).
The printer includes 32MB of memory. This can be expanded to a maximum of 544MB if desired.
The printer emits 30 dB of sound when idle and 55 dB when operating and has an operating humidity range of between 20 and 80%.
The printer does not include network support built-in, requiring an external print server compatible with either USB 2.0 or IEEE 1284 Parallel port devices in order to connect the printer to additional devices beyond one legacy system and one newer one.
Like most printers, a parallel cable or a USB 2.0 is not included with this model. While this isn't necessarily a con, it is something to consider when making preparations to install the printer.
Despite the printer's fast speed, the paper capacity of 300 sheets disqualifies this model from small office use. Even small offices often go through upwards of one ream - 500 sheets - of paper on a daily basis, requiring multiple trips to reload the printer after large print jobs and lost productivity.
