Brother's DCP-8065 is an all-in-one multifunction printer with a handful of likely desirable features, making it a fine choice for users looking for an all-in-one unit for a busy home or home office (or perhaps a very small office), as its chief limitation is in its paper capacity.
The printer measures 20.9" by 17.7" by 18.7" and weighs a remrkably svelte 35.9 lbs, making it easy to transport and to place alongside other equipment on a table, desk, or credenza. Many all-in-ones weigh much more than this, so environments in which the unit will be moved on a regular basis may want to consider this lighter model.
The printer has a maximum print speed of 30 pages per minute, which is above the standard speed offered by most devices of 20 pages per minute (though slower than the fastest models, which offer speeds of 50-60 pages per minute, even in color).
The printer produces documents at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 1200 dpi, consistent with most models like it (some newer models offer 2400 dpi, but users requiring high-quality graphics printing will likely be looking into a device capable of printing in color or a high-end inkjet).
The printer has a standard input capacity of 250 sheets, which can be expanded to 500 sheets by adding an additional 250-sheet loader. The printer also has a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray. It is capable of automatic duplex printing without any additional purchases, again helping to make this model desirable.
The printer supports printing to Plain, Bond, Envelopes, Labels, and Transparencies. In its main paper tray, it process Letter, Legal, Executive, A4, A5, and B5 sized sheets, and in its multipurpose tray can process those as well as A6, B6, and custom-sized documents between 2.75 and 8.5" and 4.57 and 14".
The printer emulates PCL6 and BR-Script 3 printing languages for users who need them, allowing for dot matrix-like prints with this system.
The printer includes IEEE 1284 Parallel, USB 2.0, and Ethernet interfaces built-in, making it easy to connect the devices to legacy PCs, new systems, and networks without any additional hardware.
The printer ships with 32MB of RAM standard, which can be expanded to 544MB if desired or necessary.
The DCP-8065 also serves as a black and white flatbed copier with a 50-page automatic document feeder. It does not require a PC to make copies and can reduce and enlarge documents at ratios between 25% and 400%. It has a built-in sorting function and can make 2-in-1 and 4-in-1 copies, as well as poster-style copies (in which one page is split across many to produce a larger image). Its document glass is legal sized.
The built-in scanner can produce both black and color scans. It features a maximum interpolated scan resolution of 19200 by 19200 dpi and an optical scan resolution of 1200 by 2400 dpi, as well as an input color scan bit depth of 48 bits. It can export documents in TIFF, BMP, MAX, JPG, and PDF formats and perform scan to functions to email, to images, to OCR, to files, and to FTP.
The printer supports network printing and scanning and a variety of network protocols.
The printer features a backlit LCD display.
Some users report that the printer misreports remaining toner quantities due to easy jamming, which can supposedly be fixed easily by manipulating the cartridge's optical sensors.
The printer also has issues with paper curling, which can risk causing jams when processing large (30-40 page copies). Additionally, though the copier's ADF holds up to 50 pages, with only 32MB of memory installed the copier can only process 8 pages at a time before running out of memory.
