Product Description
Brother HL-2040 Toner Cartridge - 2,500 Pages (Laser Printer)

This toner cartridge prints 2500 pages with average 5% coverage (Nearly all Printer manufacturers base their ink/toner cartridge yields on 5% page coverage).

Why toner? Why not call it ink? Regular ink dries quickly, which is why cartridges for inkjet printers do not last long. Laser Printers use toner, which is ink in the form of powder. A sealed toner cartridge can be stored for 2+ years prior to usage.

Product Manuals
When do I Replace a Toner Cartridge in the Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer?
The initial/starter toner cartridge installed in your Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer has a very limited printing resource, and because of that, it will be completely exhausted after no more than 1500 A4 sized prints with a maximum of 5% coverage. Herein, you should keep a spare toner cartridge for your printer in stock, so you will be able to promptly install it, once the current toner cartridge becomes exhausted. There are several signs indicating an exhausted toner cartridge in your HL-2040, but the most common are the warning signals of the built-in monitoring system. Once the toner level in the toner cartridge becomes too low, the monitoring system will detect the abnormality, and the toner cartridge warning indicator will be blinking once every 3 seconds. You must replace the exhausted toner cartridge soon after the initial appearance of the above signal. Otherwise, the remaining toner will be consumed very soon, and all printing operations will be disabled, until a new cartridge is installed. Please note that the above non-operational printer`s mode will be indicated by a constantly lit ‘’Toner’’ LED.
How to Install a Toner Cartridge in the Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer
You must start the toner cartridge replacement procedure in your Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer by opening the front cover. Then, you must grab the front handle of the drum unit and pull straight towards you, in order to remove the drum unit from the printer. The exhausted toner cartridge is installed in a special slot on the drum unit, and you must remove it from this slot by carefully pulling it towards you while pressing its blue lock release lever. Once the exhausted toner cartridge is uninstalled, you must take the new toner cartridge out of the transport packaging, and then shake it at least 10 times horizontally, in order to evenly distribute and loosen the toner. Now, you must detach the colored protective cover from the new toner cartridge, and immediately after that, you must install the cartridge into the drum unit by gently pushing it in, until it clicks into place and the toner cartridge lock release lever is automatically raised. At this stage of the replacement procedure, you must clean the primary corona wire by sliding 3-4 times the blue tab, which is located on the top side of the drum unit, along the drum unit`s recess. After the primary corona wire cleaning, you must make sure that the blue tab is back to its original position, and then install the drum unit into the printer. Finally, you must close the front cover and test your Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer.

Brother HL-2040 Review

Overview:

The Brother HL-2040 offers high resolution output but very slow print speed. It comes complete with a multipurpose slot, but has not paper storage expandability options. All in all, the printer is a mixed bag that excels in some areas and falls short in others. It is a device that is sure to suit the needs of some users perfectly while leaving others very disappointed.

Pros:

The Brother HL-2040 can produce a print quality of 2400 x 600. To put things in perspective, this is four times the quality of the current document printer standard of 600 x 600 dots per inch. Although it would be preferable if the resolution were more evenly distributed (1200 x 1200), the HQ1200 quality is certain to produce stunning results when printing imagery as well as text.

The device’s paper storage supply comes in the form of a standard 250 sheet tray that can be used with letter or legal sized paper and a single sheet bypass slot for media, such as envelopes, that cannot be loaded into the tray. Media as thick as 43 lbs. are compatible with the media slot, while the standard tray takes only 28 lb. paper of standard sizes. Unfortunately, no additional paper trays are made for the Brother HL-2040 so its paper storage is not expandable whatsoever. The output tray can hold up to 100 sheets without spilling over.

Overall dimensions of 14.6 x 14.2 x 6.5 inches mean that the Brother HL-2040 is suitable for personal desktop use and, as the device is not equipped with a network card, it would appear that this is what it was designed for. Standing at under 7 inches, the unit has a lower profile than most laser printers, making it an option for those who wish to squeeze their printer onto a shelf instead of an open surface.

Cons:

The 20 page per minute print speed that the Brother HL-2040 tops out at is quite slow in comparison to the personal laser printers that are being released today. Those who are interested in the fastest possible speed should immediately drop this printer off the radar and look elsewhere, as printers that are 50%, or more, faster are available within a similar price range.

Some of the Brother HL-2040’s specifications are just plain mediocre, such as its 8 MBs of standard memory which, unlike that of other models in the HL series, is not expandable whatsoever. It also has a maximum monthly duty cycle of only 10,000 pages which is quite a bit of output, but Brother recommends printing only 250 to 2,000 pages per month, making it quite possible to overwork this flimsy unit.

The 96 MHz processor is probably partially to blame for poor print speeds. Even from warm up this device takes a full 10 seconds to print a first page. Any time a printer breaks into double digits with its first page out time, you know users will be annoyed with the long wait involved when printing a single sheet of output.
