Two items are considered consumable items for the Brother HL 2220 printer; the drum unit and toner cartridge.
Users can replace the consumable items through the front-end of the printer.
Note: As a precaution, wait for roughly 10 minutes after the printer has been used. This will allow the printer to cool down.
Note: On the interior of the printer, on the right and left-hand sides, the electrodes are prone to static electricity. Do not touch the insides of the printer, except to remove the drum and toner assembly.
Note: As a precaution, it is best to clean the machine every instance that the drum or toner is replaced.
When the toner is low, the "Toner" LED lights will flash. The "Toner" LED lights will flash on for two seconds, and then off for three seconds; it will repeat this pattern until the toner runs out or is replaced.
Note: To use the remaining toner in a low-level toner cartridge, grab the toner with both hands on its sides, and shake gently to distribute the remaining toner.
Before replacing the toner, leave the machine on without operating it for 10 minutes. Open the front-cover (above the paper tray).
Pull out the toner and drum assembly and set down on a flat surface (Brother recommends that a sheet of disposable cloth or paper is placed on a flat surface).
Compress the green lock lever that is on the left-hand side of the toner cartridge, and remove the cartridge from the drum.
Before plugging in the new cartridge, grab the toner unit with both hands on its sides, and shake evenly from left to right to distribute the toner.
Remove the protective cover that is on the new toner cartridge.
Install the new toner cartridge into the drum unit (you can feel click or hear it click into place). When properly installed, the green lock lever will raise by itself.
The corona wire that is inside the drum unit can be cleaned by sliding the green tab sideways a few times. After the corona wire is cleaned, ensure that the green tab is back in its home position.
Note: In the green tab's home position, the ˅ arrow will be facing down and on the left side of the drum or alternatively, the ˄ arrow will be facing up on the right-hand side of the drum unit.
After the procedures above have been followed, it is time to plug in the toner and drum assembly.
Note: Don't turn off the device or open the front-cover until the LED "Ready" light is lit up.
