What is Printer Ribbon? Printer ribbon has a wax-like texture that can be melted down and fused with paper in thermal imaging printers. In Dot-Matrix & impact printers, pressure is applied to specific areas of the ribbon in order to create the printed page. Printer Ribbon is often used in dot-matrix, thermal imaging & impact printers, as well as fax machines.

Brother MFC-1950MC Review

In the year 2000, users feared that their electronic devices, such as the Brother MFC-1950MC, would cease to function due to the infamous Y2K bug. Who would have thought that ten years later, some users would still be squeezing the last bits of life out of their old fax machines thanks to sustained availability of outdated printer consumables, which keep the Brother MFC-1950MC out of the fax machine graveyard, at least for now.

The dedicated handset found on the Brother MFC-1950MC is a welcome hardware addition in an age where landline telephones are hard to come by. Other than that, the Brother MFC-1950MC has absolutely no advantage over current multifunctional fax machines which are both efficient and inexpensive. The unit is, however, still capable of executing the most basic of fax, print, and copy functions, even though the device is more than ten years old.

The Brother MFC-1950MC’s paper supply comes in the form of a 200 page cassette, which contains more than enough storage space for a device intended for such low volume. Basic fax functions, such as 24 one touch dial buttons, are found on the unit. Speed dials are programmable and simple text menus can be navigated through via a built in 16 character LCD screen. The built in handset operates as an automatically switching telephone that is an excellent bonus for the often crammed home office. Another fairly helpful integrated fax function is the units automatic redial which proceeds to call failed outgoing numbers back in five minute intervals until success.

All of the hardware found contained within the Brother MFC-1950MC is borderline obsolete. The device’s 14.4 Kbps fax modem is at least three times as slow as the Super G3 modem standard of today, and the unit’s print and copy speeds are atrocious. The device’s copy resolution maxes out at superfine fax quality, which is hardly photographic quality.

Horizontal resolution is locket at 203 dots per inch, much like it is on many fax machines. Vertical resolution can be selected between standard 98 line per inch quality, fine / photo 196 line per inch quality, and superfine / copy 392 line per inch quality. Though the Brother MFC-1950MC is technically an all in one unit, the lack of better print specifications reveal its true nature as a fax machine that happens to have PC host capabilities.

The device’s gray scale of only 64 levels is severely limiting when dealing with any kind of shaded imagery. Text documents should produce or reproduce just fine, but photographs and other images will come out of the machine looking unprofessional and of very poor quality.
