Overview:

All offices will have the need for a printer, and most will have the need for more than a printer, such as a copiers, scanner and fax machine. It is becoming more and more popular to invest in a multifunctional machine that can do all of these jobs, instead of buying them all separately. The Brother MFC-8820D has all of this, as well as some other features that would make it perfect for an office user.

Pros:

The MFC-8820D's main functionality is the ability to print. Every office needs a printer, and most will need one that is fast as well as producing high quality at the same time. This machine can in fact print at a speed of 16 pages per minute when printing in A4 sized paper. There are many faster printers out there, but for a small office, which this is aimed for, 16 pages per minute will be more than enough. With this print speed, comes a good standard of quality. It prints out in 600 x 600 resolution, which is what you would expect from a machine like this. If you are printing out documents and not focusing on images, then this quality is more than good enough. It is capable of printing out many different types of media. For example in can handle, A4, letter, legal as well as B5.

Probably the main feature that this device contains is the ability to perform duplex printing. This is where the machine can automatically print on both sides of paper, without the need for someone to manually change it around themselves. This is a very good feature as it allows the user to save time. Not only this, but if you are printing on both sides of paper, you will be using much less paper, meaning you will save money in the long run.

It contains a paper tray capable of handling around 250 sheets of standard plain paper. As well as this, it has a multi purpose tray that can hold around 50 sheets of paper. This is quite a good capacity size, as long as you are not printing out a lot of documents at the same time. This would mean that you would be constantly refilling the tray back up, slowing down workflow.

Its display is an LCD screen that has five lines of up to 22 characters. This will allow for a lot of information being displayed at the same time. This will help the novice user function the machine easier. In terms of size, it is 532 x 444 x 469 (mm). This is a good size that will fit into most office spaces as well as the home office.

Cons:

The main disadvantage of this machine is that it doesn't have much network connectivity. It cannot print over a network, only scan and fax. This will affect the day to day activity of this machine, as users will have to connect to it through other ways. These ways are not wireless, and they are through either USB or parallel interface.

It can only print out at a rate of 16 pages per minute. To most this will be sufficient, but for some offices that rely mainly on printing and copying, this could be a problem. If you find that you print out a lot of documents in one go, and need them done at a fast rate, you will need a higher end machine.


For a budget all in one machine, this is a good choice. It offers the user must functionality they would ever need in the office, as well as bonus features such as faxing and duplex printing. The duplex printing option gives the user a lot of help and will increase workflow. If it had network abilities, then this would be an almost perfect machine for a small office. However, if you don't have a need for a network then the Brother MFC-8820 could fit into your office well.
