Brother MFC-9440CN Review
With the ability to print and copy in full color, the Brother MFC-9440CN is a great option for incorporating high volume color paper handling into a smaller office setting without dealing with the price tag of a full sized color copy machine. The device is versatile, complete, and backed by Brother support, making a smart buy for those with low level color printing demands.
Paper handling is fairly standard for this color laser multifunctional unit and consists of a 250 sheet paper tray along with a 50 sheet multi purpose tray that is compatible with multiple envelopes, letterhead, labels, and even thick cardstock.
A built in automatic document feeder that sits atop the Brother MFC-9440CN is a welcome addition with its 35 pages worth of room and allows fairly large stacks of input to be fed automatically for scans, copies, and faxes. The automatic document feeder will not, however, be necessary when taking advantage of the unit’s very convenient PC fax function which allows users to communicate with other fax machines as usual through a phone line, but to do so directly from their PCs which communicate with the device’s fax modem.
The modem itself operates at a speed of 33.6Kbps, making it just about as fast as it gets when it comes to this limited technology. Faxing can also be done without the assistance of a PC thanks to features such as a very thorough dedicated control panel and a USB direct interface that allows the unit to access data directly from a portable USB device.
The unit’s print resolution is actually quite outstanding and is rated at 2400 x 600 dots per inch, placing it in the sub photo quality range but still keeping it at a level that outperforms many of its competitors. Expansion options include additional memory that can boost the device’s standard RAM from 64 MBs up to 576 MBs. An additional paper tray can be added as well and adds a full 500 sheets of storage to the device.
With a maximum monthly duty cycle of up to 35,000 sheets and up to 3,000 recommended, the Brother MFC-9440CN is more than equipped enough to handle heavy volumes of printing in both black and white and color.
The Brother MFC-9440CN’s maximum print speed of 21 pages per minute, even for a color laser printer, has fallen behind the times and is sub par in comparison to what is available on the market today. The unit’s copy speeds for both color and black and white also slip even further back with maximum speeds of 17 pages per minute. Speeds operating at about 10 pages per minute slower than units that are smaller and only marginally more expensive should definitely be considered over this device if print speed is a factor whatsoever.
Faxing functionality is incorporated to the unit, yet caller ID is not compatible with this hardware, nor is call waiting, which are just a couple of the minor annoyances found scattered throughout the device’s otherwise extensive hardware.
