Brother MFC-9700 Review
An all in one machine is essential to many offices. A machine that can do this, plus give you a bit more is the Brother MFC-9700. Although it is currently discontinued, it can still give you quality in printing, copying, scanning and faxing (even over a PC). Its single sheet bypass tray is its main function giving it that extra edge over some competitors. Read below to find out more on what this machine can do and how powerful it actually is.
For a home based business or even a small office workplace, printing out more than standard documents might be needed. For example, printing out on envelopes and labels can harder on some machines. The Brother MFC-9700 makes very light work of this though, and contains a single sheet bypass tray that can print out on different types of media. It is able to print out onto envelopes, labels or card stock. The most impressive, is the ability to print out checks. This is a very unique functionality that not many other machines can offer.
It has a print and copying speed of around 15 pages per minute. This isn't the best out there, but is still quite a fast rate especially if there aren’t a lot of people using the machine at once. Its printing quality is just the normal quality you would expect to find, 600 by 600 dpi. This gives you very good looking documents that could be used in a professional way. Another neat little feature is its economy printing mode. If you are willing to sacrifice some print quality, you can print out using 50% less than the normal toner usage. This will help you save a lot of money over time. This is very useful if you are just creating personal documents that don’t need to be the best of quality.
It comes with it's own software that can be installed on Windows or MAC computers. This allows you to scan documents directly to your computer. You can then use this software to help with archiving the documents, as well as saving them in different file formats. Another piece of software it comes with is the Brother PC Fax application. This allows you to send faxes directly from your computer. This is very useful and allows for a faster workflow.
The toner and drum life expectancy before needing to be replaced is also quite impressive. Brother says that when printing with high yield toner cartridges you will be able to achieve up to 6000 pages. When printing with standard toner cartridges you can expect to receive about 3000 pages. These measurements are all based upon a 5% coverage when printing on A4 or letter sized paper, and will obviously be different if you find yourself printing a lot of images. The drum unit has a life expectancy of around 20,000 pages, but this can also depend on the average print job. The drum life can be determined by some factors such as the type of paper you are using as well as the type of toner. It can also be affected by temperature and humidity.
The print speed of 15 pages per minute might not be fast enough for some offices. Brother say that this is based at a small to medium sized office, but it should be noted that, if the office is relying on just this one machine to print and copy all of their jobs, then 15 pages per minute wouldn't suit a medium office very well.
Also the fact that the machine is currently discontinued means that there will not be as much support. You can however still find manuals online if needed.
This is more of a specialty machine that should be used by offices that require printing on a lot of different types of paper. For example if you need to print on labels, or checks then this would be a good machine for you. The Brother MFC-9700's 15 pages per minute could be a problem though for larger offices, and should be kept to home use, or small office use.
