Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF5770 Review

Overview:

Printing at only 20 pages per minute, the Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF5770 is not without its strong points, but performance is not one of them. The device can print at above average quality and comes equipped with four functions in one, but each of these functions operates relatively slowly.

Pros:

The document feeder found on the Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF5770 is quite large indeed, holding up to 50 pages at once. This makes large quantities of scan, copy, and fax material easy to manage as the machine will take care of all the paper feeding by itself. If a user wishes to copy by hand, the flip top lid does open up to a standard scanning glass. Unfortunately, the glass is only 8.5 x 11.7 inches long, so legal sized paper must pass through the ADF.

A fax modem is a standard feature of this 4 in 1 device and it includes, as expected, a Super G3 33.6 Kbps transmission speed that can send and receive data at a rate of about 3 seconds per page. The fax memory has enough room for up to 256 pages of reception memory and an equal amount for transmission memory. With fax page memory, incoming faxes that cannot be printed right away will be held until the printer is freed up or paper becomes available.

It is a welcome surprise to find that the Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF5770’s print resolution, though settable to the bland, commonly seen 600 x 600 dots per inch, can also be cranked up to 1200 x 600 dots per inch to give output material a noticeably cleaner look. The optical scan resolution is also noteworthy, topping out at 1200 x 2400 dots per inch, although copies will only scan in at 600 x 600 dots per inch.

The copy machine features a small set of functions that include a toner save mode and a 2 on 1 mode; both of which are designed to reduce consumable costs. The toner save mode prints slightly lighter material to cut back on toner use, while the 2 on 1 mode takes two pages of input, shrinks them to half size, and squeezes them onto one page of output. This is a great way to cut down on paper when printing unimportant material.

Along with a USB port, the printer is fully network ready and equipped with a wired Ethernet output as well. With network connectivity, the entire office or home can share the benefits of have a true all in one device around.

Cons:

When printing to letter sized paper, the Canon Copier ImageCLASS MF5770 gets a small boost up to 21 pages per minute, which is still way behind the curve. Its copy speeds are limited to this poor maximum as well, and its copy resolution is also quite mediocre. Though the device is capable of printing to 1200 x 600 output, the copy element restricts this down to 600 x 600 dots per inch. It is a shame that Canon did not include an optical scanner to match the unit’s print capabilities, as without it, it is just another low resolution copy machine.
