Canon PIXMA MP560 Review

Overview:

Normally when someone mentions they have an All-in-1, usually is a large, bulky device fighting for control of your desk space. Canon has created the PIXMA MP560: a multifunction inkjet that not only prints, scans, copies, and scans, it has an automatic document feeder and wireless networking, all in a compact chassis.

Pros:

The PIXMA MP560 weighs only 17.8 pounds, and when stored takes up 18” x 14½” on your desk. The Automatic Document Feeder, normally a very bulky attachment, integrates seamlessly with the multifunction.

The MP560 gives you the option of using its 8½” x 11.7” glass platen for scanning and copying letter-sized singles, or using its 30-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) that can accept letter and the longer legal-size originals.

The multifunction can perform as a standalone: giving a person full control of all features without the need to use a computer. A front panel conceals card slots for the most popular memory cards, allowing prints to be made directly from a memory card. Digital PictBridge cameras can be directly connected to the MP560 via USB port. The control panel consists of color 2.5-inch TFT display, a 10-key pad for copies, and the traditional buttons for printing and copying functions. The display not only show additional menu functions, but can be used to preview images before printing, saving on both paper and ink.

Maximum resolution for B&W prints is a standard 600 x 600 dpi at 9.2 ipm. Using almost seven times the nozzles for color, an incredible 9600 x 2400 dpi resolution produces photo-quality images at 6 images per minute (ipm). However, if all you want to do is print 4” x 6” snapshots, the PIXMA can do it in as fast as 39 seconds.

As a scanner, the MP560 scans either at 16-bit grayscale, or 48-bit color.  The 2400 x 4800 dpi optical resolution can be digitally enhanced to a maximum 19,200 x 19,200 dpi. Traditional TWAIN or Microsoft’s WIA drivers are supported.

The PIXMA has no paper cassette tray; instead, up to 100 sheets of 20# bond paper can be loaded from the top of the printer. Capacity varies depending on media thickness. The printer can support paper sizes up to 8½” x 26” banners, and make borderless photos from 4” x 6” up to 8 ½” x 11”.

Not only does the MP560 have a USB 2.0 interface to directly connect to a PC or Mac, it has WiFi for wireless networking. The WiFi only support the latest IEEE 802.11n-band, but also the still popular b-band and g-band. However, there is no Ethernet interface for wired networking.

Originals as large as 8½” x 14” Legal paper can be copied using the 30-sheet ADF.  Zoom ranges from 25% to 400% with a choice of 1% increments, automatic resizing, or using pre-set “jumps”. Up to 99 copies can be reproduced in speeds up to 8.4 ipm.

In case you forgot to turn on the “red eye” mode before taking a picture and you aren’t a Photoshop expert, the PIXMA can make automatic photo corrections and red-eye removal right on the flash drive or Memory Stick.

Cons:

Canon should have made the glass platen larger for supporting 8.5” x 14” legal-size printing. Instead, they left the platen at 8.5” x 11.7”, but designed the ADF to accept legal-size paper. So this means you have to remember if you have a single legal-size sheet you can’t place it directly on the platen. This can cause a lot of confusion in the workplace.  Fortunately, Canon did two things: 1) Designed the ADF so people would automatically use it instead of going through the trouble of raising the top to do single copies, and 2) marketed the PIXMA for home and small offices that don’t deal with a lot of legal documents and contracts.

Canon does not offer PCL or PostScript print emulation with this model. Instead, the PIXMA uses Canon’s proprietary printer language. The Canon emulator will do the job, but imaging problems like “ghosting” may occur with Adobe Creative Suite applications without a PostScript print option.  For most printing, users won’t notice any difference in performance.

Unlike many printers that are designed for the photo-printing market, the MP560 is still a CMYK 4-color printer. The 4-color ink printing may not produce the wider color range as opposed to the 6-ink printers, but that would be more apparent with enlarged prints rather than snapshots.

Although Canon touts the MP560 as an “all-in-one”, this PIXMA doesn’t come with a fax machine option.
