Brother DCP-8080DN Review
The Brother DCP-8080DN is a small-sized multifunction copier, scanner and printer built on laser printing technology best suited to a busy home, a home office, or a small business environment. It offers a robust feature set likely more than capable of satisfying a minimal workgroup.
Like other models in Brother's DCP line, this model measures a fairly small 20.9" by 17.7" by 18.7" and weighs ony 39.9 lbs. Many other all in one units intended for larger functions occupy considerably more space and weigh two to three times as much as this model (if not more), making this one good for environments in which the printer may be transported regularly. It will likely sit comfortably alongside equipment on a table or another piece of furniture, or on a dedicated credenza or something similar.
The printer produces documents at a maximum speed of 32 pages per minute, above the industry-standard speed of 20 pages per minute but below the speeds offered by newer, higher-capacity systems of 50-60 pages per minute. For the small office environment, however, this will likely be adequate.
The printer produces documents at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 1200 dpi, consistent with most other black and white laser printers.
The printer has a standard input paper capacity of 250 sheets which can be expanded to 500 by adding an additional 250-sheet paper tray. The printer also includes a 50-sheet multi purpose tray. The printer's capacity is thus either half or one ream of paper, likely enough to satisfy a small office without requiring constant trips back to the printer to reload it, and more than enough for many home office users.
The printer's main paper tray can process letter, legal, executive, A4, A5, and B5-sized paper. The multi-purpose tray can process all of these, but also A6, B6, Envelopes, and custom documents sized between 2.75 and 8.5" in width and 4.57" and 14" in length. The printer also has built in support for duplex printing, adding another convenience not necessarily available on lower-end all in one units.
The printer ships with 64MB of memory standard, an improvement from its predecessors, which can be expanded to 576MB if desired. Users constantly making copies may wish to do this so as to increase the copier's memory to allow more documents to be fed simultaneously.
The printer can be connected using IEEE 1284 Parallel, USB 2.0, or Ethernet interfaces, making it easy to configure the printer to work with legacy PCs, newer systems, or a pre-existing network with little inconvenience.
The printer can be interfaced with a printing and scanning application for Android smartphones, allowing for wireless control of the printer.
The printer includes a black and white flatbed copier designed to accomodate documents up to legal-size on its glass or through a 50-page automatic document feeder. Its maximum speed is 32 copies per minute and it does not require a PC. It can reduce and enlarge documents between 25% and 400%, performs sorting functions, and can produce 2-in-1 and 4-in-1 pages as well.
The built-in scanner can perform black and white and color scans at a maximum interpolated scan resolution of 19200 dpi, as well as optical scans at 600 by 2400 dpi. Its bit depth is 48-bits for input color scans, and it can also be interfaced with Brother's iPrint&Scan application. It can export documents into the TIFF, BMP, MAX, JPF, and PDF formats and supports scan to functions for email, image, OCR, file, FTP, network folders, and USB.
The printer does not suppot PictBridge printing directly from digital cameras.
Unlike its predecessor, this model does not support poster copies through the copier, which can split an image into multiple pages to produce an enlargement.
The printer does not include Linux or Unix drivers, requiring that you find them yourself if planning on setting up the printer in an environment that uses non-Windows, non-Mac OS systems.
