The Brother DCP-8085DN is a multi-function printer, scanner and copier offering a substantive featureset likely to appeal to small offices, home offices, and home users who need an all-in-one unit with a small footprint at a relatively low overall cost.
The printer measures 20.9" by 17.7" by 18.7" and weighs 40.6 lbs, making it quite small when compared to other laser-based all in one units. It can be easily transported and will likely sit comfortably alongside other equipment on a desk or table without causing much inconvenience.
The printer produces documents at a maximum speed of 32 pages per minute and at a resolution of 1200 by 1200 dpi. This is above the industry-standard speeds of approximately 20 pages per minute, though behind some newer industrial models, and a print resolution likely satisfactory for anyone not intending to do high-end graphical work with this printer (which would most likely require either a considerably more substantial color laser printer or a high-end inkjet).
The printer has a standard input paper capacity of 250 sheets and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray. This can be expanded to 550 sheets by installing an optional 250-sheet paper tray, bringing its capacity to over a ream of paper and making it likely more than satisfactory for small office use as a consequence. It also includes a 150 sheet output paper capacity. Furthermore, the printer supports automatic duplex printing.
The printer ships with 64MB of memory, which can be expanded to 576MB of memory if desired. Users who regularly use the built-in copier's ADF may wish to do this, as low memory capacity will cause slowdown when making large copies.
The printer supports PCL6, BR-Script3, IBM Proprinter, and Epson FX emulation for specific fonts and environments that require them.
The printer also supports Brother's iPrint&Scan application, which allows for the device to be controlled from an Android-based smartphone.
The printer ships with parallel, USB 2.0, and Ethernet interfaces all integrated, allowing for easy setup with legacy PCs, newer systems, and network environments.
The 8085DN can perform black and white copies on a flatbed copier with a legal-sized document glass. It also has a 50-page automatic document feeder. The copier can perform reductions and enlargements between 25% and 400%, sorting, duplex copying and 2-in-1 and 4-in-1 copies. The copier does not require a PC to be configured in order to produce copies, conveniently.
The 8085DN's scanner performs black and white and color scans. It performs duplex scans and has a maximum interpolated scan resolution of 19200 by 19200 dpi and an optical scan resolution of 600 by 2400 dpi. It has a color scan bit depth of 48-bit. It can export images in TIFF, BMP, MAX, JPF, and pDF formats and supports scanning to email, image, OCR, file, FTP, network folders, and USB.
The 8085DN support a large number of network protocols in both IPv4 and IPv6, making it usable across many network architectures and in a variety of situations that other printers may not support out of the box or without complicated workarounds.
The printer supports Letter, Legal, Executive, A4, A5, and B5-sized sheets in its main paper tray. Its multipurpose tray supports printing to Letter, Legal, Executive, A4, A5, A6, B5, B6, Envelopes, and custom-sized documents between 2.75" and 8.5" in width and 4.57" and 14" in length.
The printer has a monochrome, backlit LCD to communicate its status where necessary.
Unlike earlier Brother models, this unit's copier function does not allow for poster copies, which split a single document into multiple pages to enlarge it.
The printer does not ship with any data cables, like most models don't, requiring additional purchases before the printer can be configured.
