Dell 3000cn Review
Dell's 3000cn is a color capable laser printer intended for small workgroup use and with expandability options that help it meet the demands of many small office environments. Users who predominantly work in monochrome but occasionally need color will likely fare best with this model.
The 3000cn measures 16.7" by 17" by 16.5" and weighs 53 lbs, making it small enough to fit on a desk alongside other equipment without much inconvenience. It will, however, also fit comfortably on its own desk or table, or on a credenza designed to house a printer.
The printer produces documents at a maximum speed of 25 pages sized A4 per minute in black and 5 pages per minute in color. While its black and white speed is more than adequate (and above the industry standard 20 pages per minute), the color speed is strikingly slow, meaning that users who will require color pirnting on a regular basis should almost definitely consider a faster laser printer. The printer also has first print out speeds of 9 seconds for monochrome and 17 seconds for color sheets.
The printer produces documents at a maximum resolution of 600 by 600 dpi at a maximum quality of 2400 dpi.
The printer has a 300 MHz processor and ships with 64MB of RAM, which can be expanded to 576MB of RAM if desired or necessary.
The 3000cn supports printing to A4, B5, A5, Letter, Executive, Legal-13, Legal-14, Com-10, Monarch, DK, C5, and custom sized documents between 3.5" and 8.6" in width and 5.5" and 14" in length. Its supported media types include plain paper (both light and normal), over paper, coated paper, transparencies, label stock, and envelopes, though envelopes can only be printed to using the multipurpose tray.
The 3000cn has a paper input capacity of 150 sheets in its standard input drawer, 150 sheets in its multipurpose input tray, and a 250 sheet output capacity. 250 sheet and 500 sheet A4 drawers are available as expansions, allowing for a maximum paper capacity of 900 sheets.
The printer supports PCL 5e and PCL 6 emulation. It includes 81 fonts and symbol sets, 35 fonts for PCL, and 136 fonts for PostScript 3 environments.
Duplex printing is available as an optional add-on.
The printer includes a 10/100Base-T Ethernet port, a USB 2.0 port, and an IEEE-1284 Parallel port standard for connectivity to systems, making it easy to interface it with a legacy PC, any newer system, or a workgroup environment.
The 3000cn officially supports only Microsoft Windows 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP.
The printer includes Dell's Printer Web Tool as a standard feature and offers 12 months' worth of Next Business Day on-site service.
Beyond optional duplex printing, other paper sorting and stacking options are not available with this model. Users with high enough paper throughputs to necessitate them may wish to consider another model, perhaps a multifunction unit also capable of copying, scanning, and possibly sending faxes.
If a major feature cripples this printer's viability for certain environments, it's its extremely slow color print speeds. Users who need only occasional color prints may be satisfied, but environments that need fast color printing should consider one of the many models that offer similar speeds for black and color printing in the 20 to 30 page per minute range.
Configuring support for the printer in non-Windows environments, such as in Mac OS X or in Linux, can be tricky, requiring unofficial drivers and workarounds to get full printer function (such as color printing).
