Product Manuals
ADDING TONER TO THE HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP
When one of the toner containers in the HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP is running low, the message PLEASE ADD TONER will be displayed on the machine’s LCD screen. The unit will also light up one or more of the letters C, M, Y, and K next to the ADD TONER message on the touch screen. These letters are representative of the four colors Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black, and each of the four colors will not necessarily run low at the same time. The toner bottles will also each be labeled by a number on the end of the bottle which must correspond with the number on the replacement bottle.

Each new toner bottle must have its toner loosened by tapping both ends of the bottle on a hard surface while being held vertically. After tapping a bottle, shake it in all directions several times. This will ensure proper fluidity of toner and maximize the life of the cartridge.

The toner access door on the side of the printer must be opened to replace a toner bottle. Each bottle will be held in place by a cover that can be unlocked by pressing a small release tab and opened. Select the bottle or bottle that needs replacement and open the bottle cover, then pull the bottle out of the machine enough to be able to turn it so that the up arrow is at the top. With the arrow in the 12 o’clock position, pull the bottle out of the machine.

A cap will be found on the end of the new toner bottle, sealing the toner inside. Remove this cap from the new bottle and screw it onto the old bottle to keep any excess toner from spilling. Dispose of the old bottle by recycling.

The new bottle must also have its up arrow positioned at the top of the container. Doing so will allow the groves on the bottle to line up with the tabs inside the machine. Align the bottle and slide it into the machine, closing the cover both toner covers after it.
EMPTYING THE HP 3 HOLE PUNCH KIT
The HP 3 hole punch add on for the HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP catches its punched paper into a waste basket that will, from time to time, need to be emptied by hand. When the machine senses that the hole punches need to be emptied, it will display the message TRASH BASKET OF PUNCHING KIT IS FULL, PLEASE EMPTY TRASH BASKET. This is not to be confused with the TRASH BASKET OF TRIMMER IS FULL, PLEASE EMPTY TRASH BASKET message that is displayed when the unit’s paper trimmer is full.

When the warning message appears, the HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP will no longer punch paper until it is cleaned out. To do so, open the door on the punch finisher. The trash basket will be easily visible and can be slid out of the machine. Empty the punched paper inside the basket and slide it back into its original position inside the machine. Close the finisher door and the machine will momentarily sense that it is no longer full.

HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP

Overview:

The HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP is not only one of the fastest color laser copiers in existence, it is also one of the most affordable. This 50 page per minute color combination machine is fully expandable to accommodate a wide variety of color document handling demands, and its reasonable cost of consumables and reduced overhead price make it a great choice for those who are hoping to see a low cost per page along with a high performance level.

Pros:

It is important to recognize that the HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP’s 50 page per minute print speed is not limited only to black and white draft quality. Cranking up the print resolution to normal or even highest quality does not affect the unit’s overall print speed and neither does printing in color. Many printers have their advertised print speeds boosted by listing only draft quality performance levels, but the 9850 is the real deal when it comes to pages per minute.

The unit’s first page out times are, as expected, quite good. They can be clocked as fast as 6 seconds for black and white prints and a mere 7.2 seconds for color. While there are device’s out there that manage to shave off a couple more seconds to their first page out, the HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP is still remarkably fast.

A maximum monthly duty cycle of 150,000 pages is sufficient to handle the demands of an office that requires constant use of their copy machine. Its standard input capacity of 1,750 sheets is also suitable for heavy volume use, but it is its maximum paper storage capacity of 4,250 sheets that is really impressive. This amount of space can be achieved by incorporating several additional paper drawers including a high capacity one.

Cons:

It is a shame that the HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP is not equipped with the ability to print in a true resolution of anything higher than 600 x 600 dots per inch. This means that photo quality color printing is out of the question, and even the extra sharp text that results from 1200 x 1200 dot per inch print quality is not achievable. The best that the device can do is execute a 600 x 1800 dot per inch enhanced resolution which will provide noticeable improvement in material such as business graphics, but will still not do the unit’s color print capabilities justice.

While this cannot really be held against the HP Color LaserJet 9850MFP too much, its weight is quite outstanding. This machine weighs 722 pounds. At this weight, the unit is nearly impossible to move even with a team of able bodied men. When additional finishers and other hardware are added, the unit becomes even more cumbersome. A device that measures only 30 x 35 x 46.4 inches (W x D x H) and weighs over 700 pounds is about as dense as a block of concrete, and thus its weight must be taken into account when considering the unit for purchase, especially by those who need to move the unit up a flight of stairs.
