HP LaserJet 5100dtn Review
The HP LaserJet 5100dtn is a multifunction laser jet printer from HP’s 5100 printer series. Providing the most features in its series line, the HP LaserJet 5100dtn gives seamless duplexing functions and productivity with the signature quality that HP printers deliver. Home and office workplaces will be thrilled with HP LaserJet 5100dtn’s high production capability and on top of the simplicity of its design that makes it quite easy to use for faster and more efficient printing.
The HP LaserJet 5100dtn allows a speed of up to 21 pages per minute on letter-size documents and up to 11 ppm on 11 x 17-inch documents. It is also quite fast for producing first page out results, which can be as quick as 13 seconds. The HP LaserJet 5100dtn also offers quite impressive resolution for its print outputs, able to produce up to 1200 x 1200 dots per inch through its ProRes and Resolution Enhancement Technology. Memory has a standard 32 MB, which can be expanded up to 192 MB through its three industry-standard DIMM slots. Printer language support includes PCL 6, PCL 5e, HP-GL/2 and PostScript 3 emulation. For supported fonts, the HP LaserJet 5100dtn has 110 scalable TrueType fonts of 80 built-in and 30 HP FontSmart for Windows. PCL and PostScript fonts are also accessible. The HP LaserJet 5100dtn features an optional wireless connectivity with an 802.11b internal wireless card to go with its standard IEEE 284-compliant parallel, one EIO slot, JetDirect print server for its Ethernet 10/100 TX in its second slot.
Media handling for the HP LaserJet 5100dtn features two input trays with 100-sheet and 250-sheet capacities, with an optional 250-sheet tray. For high-volume print production, a 500-sheet feeder is also included and a standard automatic duplexer unit for faster two-side printing. Supported media sizes include letter, legal, executive, tabloid and no. 10 envelopes. First tray supports 3 x 5-inch media to 12.8 x 18.5-inch media, while trays 2, 3 and 4 support 5.8 x 8.3 inch to 11.7 x 17-inch types.
The HP LaserJet 5100dtn only supports Windows operating systems and MAC OS X for its network systems, which is not as flexible as other printers in its class. Support for Windows is only up to Windows XP, which limits the HP LaserJet 5100dtnf ability to be maximized for other computers with more advanced operating system types such as Windows Vista and Windows 7. The HP LaserJet 5100dtn also does not offer support for Linux and other operating systems, further diminishing its availability to other users and offices that have Linux and other operating system distributions.
The HP LaserJet 5100dtn is also quite hefty and heavy for a laser jet monochrome printer, registering dimensions of 17.8 x 22.8 x 26.2 inches for its width, depth and height, respectively, and 114 lbs for its total weight. This makes the HP LaserJet 5100dtn less appealing to compact home and office spaces that value space-saving features offered by their printers. While it is a laser jet printer that is optimized for high volume printing, the HP LaserJet 5100dtn is still relatively larger compared to other printers that also cater to high volume print production. It is also not a power-conserving machine, producing approximately 330 watts of power while on active mode. For users that put a premium on saving power consumption, the HP LaserJet 5100dtn is not exactly the ideal printer to get. Speed for the HP LaserJet 5100dtn is also not that fast when compared to other high-volume printers, which can clock up to twice the speed offered by the HP LaserJet 5100dtn. |
