HP LaserJet P2014n Review
The HP LaserJet P2014n is a monochrome workgroup laser printer intended for small office environments with a fairly standard feature set and speeds for a printer manufactured for such environments in the early 2000s.
The LaserJet P2014n measures 13.8" by 10.1" by 14.3" and weighs 22.7 lbs, making it much smaller than all in one units and many workgroup printers. It should sit comfortably alongside other equipment or on its own dedicated table, desk or credenza.
The P2014n produces documents at a maximum speed of 23 pages per minute in black and white when processing A4-sized sheets (8.25" by 11.7") and 24 pages per minute when processing Letter A size documents (8.5" by 11"). Documents are output at a minimum resolution of 600 by 600 dpi and a maximum resolution of 1200 by 1200 dpi, consistent with most models like this one (though newer workgroup laser printers offer speeds of upwards of 40-50 pages per minute and resolutions up to 2400 dpi). The printer includes support for PostScript standard, can emulate PCL 5E when needed, has 26 intellifonts built in, and has a first print out speed of 8.5 seconds.
The printer interfaces with systems either via USB or 10/100Base-TX Ethernet, allowing for easy networking and connectivity with most newer computers.
The printer has a 250 sheet input tray and a 50 sheet multipurpose tray, as well as a 150 sheet output tray. It can be expanded to 550 sheets if desired by installing a 250-sheet enclosed input tray, bringing its capacity to over one ream of paper and likely enough to satisfy a small office with a relatively low (but still somewhat moderate) paper requirement each day (the P2014n is rated as having a monthly duty cycle of 10000 pages).
The P2014n features six LEDs and two buttons on its control panel for easy offline access and configuration.
The P2014n supports watermarking documents as it prints them, booklet printing, N-up printing (which allows the user to produce multiple pages on a single sheet of paper), and rules that place the first page onto a different media type than the rest of the document.
The printer does not include a scanner, copier, or fax modem and these features cannot be added through expansions in any way, making this a poor choice for an office looking to integrate all of their functions into a single unit.
The printer features 32MB of RAM with no expandability, which is a relatively small amount for users regularly printing high-resolution PDFs and other memory-intensive documents. Users looking to print large documents on a regular basis will likely want to consider another model over this one both for reasons of print definition and memory limitations.
The P2014n does not feature a parallel port, though the P2014 does. Users who need legacy PC support will need to network their systems if needing to connect a system to this printer.
Various operating systems are limited to certain printer functionality. Windows 98, for example, can only function under the printer's PCL 5e driver, as can Windows Me, NT 4.0, and XP 64-bit (the 32-bit version of Windows XP is unrestricted, as is Windows Vista and Mac OS X, which is supported by versions 10.2.8 and newer, though some users have reported problems when trying to print from 10.6).
Duplex printing and other advanced paper handling options are not available with this model, which lacks support for anything but simple paper output.
