HP LaserJet P3015x Review
The HP LaserJet P3015x is a higher capacity, more powerful version of the LaserJet P3015n and P3015dn printer, offering a larger paper capacity than those models, as well as automatic duplex printing, which is not included standard on the P3015n.
The printer measures 17.6" by 16.2" by 18.9" when collapsed and 17.6" by 28.7" by 18.9" with all of its trays expanded for full functionality. It weighs 10 more pounds than the other models in the P3010 series, at 46.6 lbs, making it still less heavy than all-in-one units but heavier than many consumer inkjet and laser printers. It will likely function best on a dedicated piece of furniture, such as a printer cabinet or credenza.
The P3015x produces documents at a maximum speed of up to 42 pages per minute and with a first page out of 7.5 seconds, well above the standard speed of 20 pages per minute and likely more than satisfactory in many environments. It supports a maximum printing resolution of 1200 by 1200 dpi, again comparable to most models like this one.
The printer ships with 128 MB of RAM, expandable to 640 MB if needed. A secure EIO hard drive is also available for document storage and recall. The printer supports HP's PCL 5e and PCL 6 print languages. It also offers HP PostScript Level 3 emulation and direct PDF printing. It features 103 internal PCL fonts and 93 internal PostScript fonts, as well as support for Greek, Hebrew, Cyrillic, and Arabic character sets.
The P3015x ships with 3 paper trays standard, which can be expanded to a maximum of 4 trays. In its standard configuration, the P3015x features a 1100 sheet capacity spread across 2 500 sheet input trays and 1 100 sheet multipurpose tray, and another 500 sheet input tray can be installed to bring its capacity to 1600, over 3 reams of paper and more than enough to satisfy many office environments.
The P3015x supports duplex printing standard and features a 250 sheet output bin and a 100 sheet rear output bin. It supports printing to letter, legal and executive paper, as well as 8.5" by 13" sheets and envelopes. The multipurpose tray supports documents sized between 3" by 5" and 8.5" by 14", and the feeder tray can process documents sized between 4.1" by 5.8" and 8.5" by 14". Supported paper types include bond, color, letterhead, plain, preprinted, prepunched, recycled, and rough, as well as envelopes, labels, cardstock, transparencies, and user-defined media.
The P3015x ships with a USB 2.0 port and a gigabit ethernet port, as well as an EIO port, a front-panel USB 2.0 port and 2 internal accessory ports. These can support HP Jetdirect print servers, both internally and externally, as well as 3rd-party solutions, wireless print servers, and an added parallel port if needed to support legacy systems.
The P3015x supports Windows versions from 2000 onward and Mac OS X from 10.3.9 onward. It also supports several flavors of Linux and Novell NetWare. The printer also supports a variety of network environments, such as Apple Bonjour, SNMP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, TFTP, LPD, WS Discovery, IPP, Secure-IPP, IPsec/Firewall, Telnet, BOOTP,
The printer features a four-line LCD with a 10-number key pad which can be used for tasks such as retrieving encrypted documents from the printer's memory as well as offline configuration.
Though there are substantial advantages to adding a hard drive to the printer, doing so introduces another set of moving parts and a potential failure point to the unit, possibly causing inconvenient downtime in the future.
The printer does not ship with a USB cable.
