LaserJet Pro M1132 Review
HP's LaserJet Pro M1132 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer offering print, scan and copier functions in a relatively small package best suited for a very small office or a home office environment. While it lacks a substantive feature set or any options for expandability, it does offer relatively fast printing in a rather compact package, and for some users this may be more than enough to make this printer a good value.
The M1132 measures 16.33" by 10.4" by 9.8" and weighs 15.43 lbs, making it small and lightweight enough to fit on a table or desk alongside other equipment without much inconvenience, as well as easy to transport when compared to the much heavier industrial multifunction printers intended for workgroup use.
The M1132's printer produces documents at a maximum speed of 18 pages per minute and has a first page out of 8.5 seconds. This is consistent with most other home and home office laser printers, if not somewhat faster, though below the industrial speeds available from systems with higher throughputs. It produces documents at a maximum resolution of 600 by 600 dpi, with 1200 effective dpi possible using the HP FastRes 1200 technology.
The M1132 has a 150 sheet paper input tray and a 100 sheet face down output bin, as well as a maximum input capacity of up to 10 envelopes (it does not include an envelope feeder).
The M1132 supports media sized A4, A5, ISO B5, C5, ISO C5/6, ISO DL, 16K, and European postcard, as well as custom media sized between 3" by 5" and 8.5" by 14". It can process plain and laser paper, envelopes, transparencies, labels, card stock, and postcards.
The M1132's scanner has an optical scanning resolution of 1200 dpi at 24-bit. Its black scan quality is up to 6 pages per minute and it does not support duplex scanning through the ADF. The maximum scan size possible is 8.5" by 11.7". The scanner supports scan to e-mail, scan to application, and scan to file, though this is restricted to Windows-based PCs; the scanner can produce images in PDF, TIF, BMP, GIF, and JPG formats.
The M1132's copier has a maximum copy resolution of 600 by 400 dpi in both black and in color. It can resize and process documents between 30% and 400% and produces up to 99 copies at a time.
The M1132 has a dual digit numeric LCD; it does not support memory cards.
The M1132 offers a USB 2.0 port and has no additional options for connectivity, requiring an external USB-based print server to network the device or that it be used via printer sharing (requiring that the computer it's connected to be on for other systems to access it under most configurations). Supported operating systems include Mac OS X from 10.4 onward and Windows XP or newer.
Unlike some other currently available home office devices, fully automatic duplex printing and copying is not available with this model.
The M1132 ships with 8 MB of memory, which cannot be expanded. As a consequence, large, high-resolution documents such as PDFs may print very slowly. Users who regularly process such documents way want to consider another model as a consequence. The printer also includes no native support for standard printer languages.
The printer has a small paper capacity of 150 sheets which cannot be expanded, disqualifying it from use in most office environments except possibly for an individual.
