HP LaserJet 1320 Review
The HP LaserJet 1320 is another quality HP black and white laser printing solution that is targeted specifically to businesses. Great print quality, fast speeds and quiet operation are three key laser printer qualities that are present in this model. Combined with compact dimensions, Windows and Mac compatibility, and an optional toner cartridge designed specifically for printing payroll checks, the HP LaserJet 1320 is an extremely affordable and versatile piece of business equipment.
The laser printing technology present in the HP LaserJet 1320 produces up to 22 pages per minute in the best quality mode and a resolution of up to 1,200 x 1,200 dots per inch, combining speed and quality in one package.
Automatic duplexing allows for two-sided page printing which cuts paper usage in half on certain jobs. This model is the only one in its price range that has this built-in capability.
A recommended monthly volume of up to 10,000 pages provides plenty of room for a business to handle medium-sized workloads and repeated weekly operations such as payroll, invoicing and reports.
A large variety of media types can be used, including light, heavy, plain, recycled and rough paper. Printing can also be done on envelopes, labels, card stock, transparencies, and various heavy media.
Standard and custom media sizes can range from 3" by 5" to 8.5" by 14" legal size.
The HP LaserJet 1320 has very small dimensions for a printer with its abilities. A cubic design with no protruding trays allows smaller offices and businesses to conserve valuable table and desk space.
A variety of Windows and Mac operating systems are supported, with an option to connect to a PC via high-speed USB or a bi-directional parallel port.
A getting started guide and a CD-ROM that includes software and digital user manual come bundled with this model to provide easy and convenient setup and configuration guidance that people with even the most elementary technical knowledge can implement.
HP's smart printing technology simplifies printer management by providing automatic alerts when a toner cartridge is low and HP SureSupply software offers easy, convenient online ordering.
Toner cartridges are easy to install and replace with access via one dedicated door.
16 MB of standard printer memory is upgradeable to 144 MB, making this model capable of handling the most complex of tasks and print queues.
The standard paper input capacity of 250 sheets only allows for approximately 11 minutes of printing before paper has to be added to the tray. A second 250 sheet tray must be purchased separately as an upgrade to provide a more suitable paper capacity worthy of this printer's speed. The manual feed tray does not operate smoothly and rarely produces the desired results, making this one of the few and most blatant design problems within this unit.
Even though the output resolution is high on this model, the contrast is too low and printed text is lighter than that of comparable printers, even at the highest setting.
Ethernet networking capabilities are not standard with this model, which is designated as a single-user printer, excluding it from most small to medium office use. For integrated wired and wireless adapters, one of three other model variations would have to be purchased.
Paper jams can be frequent depending on the type of media used, due to the internal roller design that curls the paper multiple times during the print process. Sometimes clearing the paper jam isn't enough to clear the error state after hitting the resume button to continue. It is often necessary to completely shut the printer down and clear the job from the Windows print queue, which can lead to lengthy and costly down times.
