Lexmark W820 Review
Lexmark's W820 Laser Printer offers a substantive number of features and considerable options to ensure compatibility, making it a potentially decent choice for offices looking for a model able to perform in many different software and network environments at relatively fast speeds.
The printer measures 19" by 35.5" by 22" and weighs 105 lbs in its base configuration, making it likely necessary to place the printer on its own desk or table or on a credenza. It may sit alongside other equipment, but expansion will likely render this frustrating and impractical.
The printer produces pages at a speed of up to 45 pages per minute, above the industry-standard 20 pages per minute and making it comparable with many models newer than this one. Documents have a maximum resolution of 1200 dpi, though the printer also produces sheets at 300 or 600 dpi if desired. Its time to first place is under 7 seconds.
The printer has 32MB of memory included, though this can be expanded to 384 MB if necessary in order to ensure functional printing in a bigger environment.
The W820 supports a huge number of operating systems, including all versions of Mac OS from 8.6 onward and Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows from Windows 95 onward, Novell NetWare from version 3.x onward, many flavors of Lunix and Unix, IBM's iSeries OS, and "virtually any platform supporting TCP/IP." Users with many legacy systems may thus want to consider the W820 to ensure the ability to print across almost any platform thrown at it.
The printer has two 500-sheet input trays, as well as a 35-sheet multipurpose feeder and a 500-sheet output bin included standard. Options for expansion include an envelope feeder, a duplex unit, a 2500 sheet high capacity feeder and a 3250 sheet finisher. It supports A3, A4, A5, Executive, Folio, JIS-B4, JIS-B5, Ledger, Legal, Letter, Statement, C5 Envelope, DL Envelope, 7 3/4 Envelope, 10 Envelope, and Universal sized documents and can print to Plain Paper, 90lb index, Transparencies, Envelopes, Card Stock, and Labels.
The printer's standard input capacity is 1035 pages and can be expanded to a maximum of 3535 pages. Its output capacity, standard, is 500 pages, and its maximum is 3550 pages. Its envelope capacity is 100.
The printer includes a USB port, an IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel port, and two internal card slots standard. Optional local ports include external serial adapters, an additional internal parallel port, and an internal serial port. Optional network ports include internal 10/100 Base TX, 10BaseT/2, Fiber 100Basefx, and Token-ring. External ports available include 10/100 Base TX, 10BaseT/2, and Token-ring, and coax/twinax adapters are also available.
Network connectivity is possible using a Marknet print server. Additional products enable bar code printing, custom business forms. IBM mainframe and AS/400 printing, internet printing, local printing, management and installation, network printing and SAP printing.
The printer supports emulation for the PCL 6 print language, as well as PPDS and PostScript 3. Supported fonts include 156 scalable PostScript fonts, 84 scalable PCL fonts, 2 PCL bitmap fonts, 39 scalable PPDS fonts, and 5 PPDS bitmap fonts. Chinese and Japanese fonts are avialable through additional DIMMs.
Duplex functionality is available through an add-on, but not available with the base model of this printer.
Optional duplex printing slows down the printing process considerably and can sometimes cause paper jams on a regular basis, causing frustration to many workplace environments.
Additional functionality is reportedly available to allow for the printer to function as a copier, a scanner, or a fax machine, though this is not thoroughly mentioned in Lexmark's documentation and the add-ons necessary to make this possible are not immediately available. Given that the printer is discontinued, finding these items may prove to be exceptionally difficult.
