Lexmark X204N Review
With mediocre print quality, below average print speed, and a very low maximum monthly duty cycle, the Lexmark X204N would be only a barely satisfactory purchase, that is if it wasn’t, like all Lexmark printers, ridiculously overpriced. Simply put, buyers can get much more for their money than this lukewarm, run of the mill desktop printer and their money would be better spent elsewhere.
With a network card built in, the Lexmark X204N can connect to a number of host PCs at one time. This, along with its high print resolution, is one of the model’s only saving graces. The printer is capable of printing to some questionable 2400 and 1200 dpi “image” modes, but users will be best off taking advantage of true 600 x 600 dot per inch and true 1200 x 1200 dot per inch print quality. True 1200 dot per inch resolution is four times higher than that of many bargain laser printers, and is one of the few justifications the Lexmark X204N has for its high price.
The Lexmark X204N prints at a maximum speed of 24 pages per minute. In an age of 30 page per minute and faster desktop units, this speed is very disappointing. The hardware does seem to have an emphasis placed on multifunctionality over raw power, but the fact of the matter is that users can buy a very similar multifunctional unit that can do pretty much everything that the Lexmark X204N can for less money. Definitely take a look at tried and true brands such as Canon and Brother to see what they can offer for the same up front cost before spending money on a Lexmark.
