OkiData C5510n MFP review
The OkiData C5510n is a color multifunction printer best suited to user bases somewhere between the small office and the workgroup. It suffers from a number of design issues that make it difficult to recommend for users with either very high paper throughputs or a regular need for color printing, but for users in predominantly monochrome environments it may be more than satisfactory.
The C5510n measures 34" by 26" by 30.12" and weighs 143 lbs, making it best suited for a dedicated piece of furniture such as a printer cabinet or credenza. As this is a workgroup MFP, it's likely too large and too heavy to place on a desk alongside other equipment and would be rendered impractical to access in such a configuration.
The C5510n produces pages at a maximum speed of 20 pages per minute in black and white and 12 pages per minute in color, as well as at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi.
The C5510n interfaces with devices using USB 2.0 or 10/100 Base-T ethernet, with support for Windows NT 4.0, 98 SE, 2000, XP, and Me. It includes a web-based printer and MFP management system to provide page tracking and consumable usage information.
The C5510n's copier system produces copies at speeds of up to 12 copies per minute in color and 20 in balck and white at a maximum resolution of 600 by 600 dpi and an enhanced resolution of 4800 dpi. Copies can be scaled between 25% and 400% in 1% increments, and density control is available across a five level system. Image processing and background removal are available, and up to 99 copies at a time can be made.
The C5510n includes a scanner, which can process documents either via a 50-sheet ADF or a single-sheet flatbed. It includes support for Scan to PC, Scan to Email, and Scan to File systems, as well as network support for these features.
The C5510n ships with 96 MB of RAM, which can be expanded to 288 MB if desired.
The C5510n's ADF has a maximum sheet size of 8.5" by 14", as well as a 400 sheet paper capacity split between a 300 sheet standard tray and a 100 sheet multipurpose tray, which supports documents as large as 8.5" by 47.24".
The C5510n features a substantive keypad and LED system allowing for a large number of configuration options to be set on the MFP, rather than in software, saving time and producing less software-related headaches for many users.
While 20 pages per minute was more than satisfactory at the time of the printer's release, it now seems considerably slower than the speeds offered by MFPs of similar size, which push upwards of 40-50 pages per minute in both black and white and in color.
The C5510n only offers host-based font support, meaning that non-Windows operating systems are largely unsupported by the C5510n, potetially leading to a number of inconveniences when attempting to add devices or ensure long-term support for this device within your workgroup.
Users report that the C5510n suffers from inaccurate color production.
Additional paper storage is not available for the C5510n, crippling its viability for workgroups with high enough paper throughputs. Many small offices go through upwards of a ream of paper - 500 sheets - each day, and this printer includes no options for expansion in order to meet even that amount (it maxes out at 400 sheets total).
Furthermore, the C5510n includes no onboard telephone fax system, requiring that all faxes be done via software rather than telephone transmissions, creating potential inconvenience and frustration for users in an environment that requires regular fax usage.
