OkiData C5700 review
The OkiData C5700 is a workgroup-ready color laser printer that offers fast reproductions of black and white documents and more than satisfactory speeds when producing color ones, making it likely best suited to a small to moderate sized workgroup that needs a powerful printer without the additional features of an industrial MFP.
The C5700 measures 13.36" by 17" by 22.2" and weighs approximately 57 lbs with all consumables installed, making it consistent in size with most larger desktop laser printers. Users can store it alongside other computer equipment on a desk or table with minimal inconvenience, which can't be said of most MFPs or larger models (which require a dedicated piece of furniture for storage and consistent access).
The C5700 produces sheets at a maximum speed of 20 pages per minute in color and 32 pages per minute in black and white, more than industry standard speeds though slower than the extreme speeds now offered by some newer models. The printer has a time to first print of 11 seconds in color and 8 seconds in black and white, much better than predecessors where times to first print were twice as long for color as it was for black and white. Warm ups take up to 60 seconds from power on and 45 seconds from power save mode.
The C5700 produces documents at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi with image enhancements such as Auto Color Balance and Photo Enhance available through drivers. The printer produces images using a single pass digital LED system with four image drums.
The printer's internal tray supports 300 sheets of paper measuring A4, A5, B5, or A6; its multi-purpose tray supports 100 sheets of paper sized A4, A5, B5, A6, C5, DL, Com-9, Com-10, Monarch, Legal 13, Legal 13.5, Legal 14, Letter, Executive, or custom sized documents as wide as 47". For work environments that need additional paper access, a 530-sheet tray can be added to the printer.
The C5700 supports a number of printing languages to ensure largely accurate reproduction of fonts, including PCL 6, PostScript 3, and SIDM. It interfaces with computers via either USB 2.0 or 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet for easy networking, and supports most versions of Windows and both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. A number of utilities are included with the printer for Windows users.
The C5700 ships with 64MB of RAM, which can be expanded to 320MB of RAM if desired to speed up the printing process.
Image enhancements are available within the C5700's drivers, but only in Windows environments, as are systems such as color correction, LPR, print job supervision, a template management utility, web interface installation and interface control, webpage scaling, print control servers, and storage device management. Users who need platform-neutral network control will likely want to consider a printer other than this one or, if set on it, be prepared to use third-party utilities to ensure full printer function under most circumstances.
