review - OkiData C5800Ldn review
The OkiData C5800Ldn is a color desktop laser printer best suited to the small to moderate workgroup environment, offering fast prints in both color and black and white and a fairly robust feature set. Expandable without being the size of an industrial MFP, many users will likely be pleased with its printing speeds and relatively compact size.
The printer measures 17.1" by 24.3" by 13.4" and weighs 63.8 lbs with its duplex unit installed, making it consistent in size and weight with most desktop lasers and more than suitable to be stored on top of a table or desk, rather than on a dedicated piece of furniture, like many MFPs and industrial laser printers require due to their larger size.
The C5800Ldn produces pages at maximum speeds of 24 pages per minute in color and 28 pages per minute in black and white, above industry standard speeds of 20 sheets per minute but below the high speeds of 40-60 pages per minute offered by the highest-end paper handling devices currently available. The printer has a time to first page of 11 seconds when printing color and 10 seconds when printing in black and white, and a maximum document resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi with a duty cycle of up to 60000 pages each month. Duplex printing is available in the printer's default configuration, setting the printer apart from a number of other models.
The C5800Ldn supports up to 400 sheets in its main paper tray and 100 sheets in its multi-purpose tray, which can be expanded to 930 sheets by installing a second paper tray with a capacity of 530 sheets. The main and additional tray support printing to paper sized Letter, Legal, or Universal, and the multi-purpose tray supports printing to overhead transparencies, envelopes, index card stock, mailing labels, and banners as wide as 47.24", consistent with other workgroup printers in OkiData's C series. Even many small offices go through upwards of a ream of paper - 500 sheets - over the course of a day, and as a consequence the added paper tray will likely make the printer more than capable of satisfying the paper needs of most environments.
The C5800Ldn's main tray supports printing to paper weighted between 20 lb and 32 lb bond, and its optional second tray supports paper weighted between 20 and 47 lb bond while its manual feed supports 20 lb bond up to 110 lb index card stock, and its duplex feed unit supports 20 lb up to 28 lb bond.
Web-based printer management consists of access to PrintSuperVision and OkiLAN Embedded Web Server, built into the printer for job management and color print control.
The C5800Ldn supports Windows operating systems, Mac OS 9, and Mac OS X v10.2 and newer.
The printer ships with 128 MB of RAM, which can be expanded to 320 MB of memory if desired by adding a 64 MB DIMM or a 256 MB DIMM module, which will speed up the time necessary to process large, image-intensive documents.
The printer relies entirely on host computer fonts for printing, as it includes no onboard fonts. Users who need to use the printer in environments where driver support isn't necessarily guaranteed, such as Unix, Linux, and DOS, may have issues producing documents on this system without third-party workarounds, as may users of recent versions of Mac OS X, as many older printers have issues with printing in versions 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard without updated drivers.
