OkiData C5950 Review
The OkiData C5950 is a desktop color laser printer best suited to the small workgroup environment, where its print speeds and paper throughput will likely be more than satisfactory for many users. It offers a fairly robust feature set, making it more capable than many printers like it but still not as large or demanding as an industrial MFP.
The printer measures 13.36" by 17.13" by 22.17" and weighs approximately 57.3 lbs, making it relatively small when compared to industrial printers and manageable to keep on a desktop or tabletop alongside other computer equipment, rather than on a dedicated piece of furniture such as a cabinet or a credenza. However, if desired, an optional cabinet is available to bring the printer up to chest height for easy access.
The C5950 produces sheets at a maximum speed of 26 pages per minute in color and 32 pages per minute in black and white, likely more than satisfactory for almost any small workgroup and considerably faster than most desktop laser or inkjet printers. However, if desired, printers with speeds upwards of 40-60 pages per minute are available.
The C5950 produces documents at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi with picture enhancement available at the driver level, making possible automatic color enhancements and photo enhancements. Higher resolution prints are rarely available on desktop laser printers, so users who need resolutions of 2400 dpi or larger will likely want to consider a personal high-end inkjet.
The C5950's internal paper tray supports up to 300 sheets of paper sized A4, A5, B5, or A6. Its multipurpose tray supports a maximum capacity of 100 sheets at a time of paper sized A4, A5, B5, A6, Legal 13, Legal 13.5, Legal 14, Letter, or Executive, or up to 10 envelopes of C5, DL, COM-9, COM-10, or Monarch, as well as banners as long as 47". A 530-sheet paper tray can be added to increase the printer's total capacity to 930 sheets, almost two full-size reams of paper, before requiring any replacement, more than enough to satisfy almost any small office's daily paper throughput.
The printer includes considerable support for built-in printing languages, making it easier to allow for cross-platform support and easy printing from DOS and other non-Windows operating systems than it is to do so from printers that require all font support to be host-based. Included fonts are PCL 6 (XL 3.0 and PCL 5c, as well as clone support for PostScript 3), and SIDM (IBM-PPR and Epson-FX).
The C5950 interfaces with devices using USB 2.0 and 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet for easy connectivity. Legacy systems, if you still have any in your workgroup, will need to be networked. The included drivers provide compatibility with Windows 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Mac OS 9, and Mac OS X.
Provided software supports color correction, LPR, Print Supervision, a swatch utility, a template manager, a Web-based driver installer, a Web-based print utility, a Print control server and print control client, a storage device manager, a gamma utlity and a profile assistant.
The C5950 ships with 256MB of RAM, which can be expanded to a maximum of 768MB if desired.
The C5950's provided software is largely Windows-only, requiring third-party workarounds for environments that don't use Windows systems.
