OkiData C6000 review
Small yet relatively feature-rich, the OkiData C6000 is a desktop color laser printer designed to flourish in the small workgroup environment, offering multilevel LED printing at above-standard speeds in a compact package.
The C6000 measures 17.1" by 22.1" by 13.4" without an automatic duplex unit; installing the automatic duplexer changes these dimension to 17.1" by 24.3" by 13.4". The printer also weighs 57.3 lbs in a standard configuration, which goes up to 63.8 lbs if its duplexer is installed. This makes the printer quite wide but small enough to fit on a desktop or tabletop, but can also be made taller by placing it atop a dedicated cabinet or credenza if desired.
The C6000 produces documents at a maximum speed of 20 pages per minute color and 24 pages per minute in black and white, consistent with most other models like this one, though some newer desktop laser printers offer speeds between 30 and 35 pages per minute when printing in black and white. Its time to first page is again consistent at 11 seconds in color and 10 seconds in black and white, much better than earlier models where color prints often took twice as long, if not longer. The printer also produces documents at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi, like most models like it.
The printer ships with a warranty allowing for 24-hour exchanges of defective parts in order to ensure that printer function can be quickly restored in the event of a component failure.
The printer has room for 400 sheets of paper in its standard configuration, split between a 300-sheet legal, letter and universal tray and a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray. By adding a 530-sheet paper tray, you can bring the printer's capacity up to 930 sheets, almost two reams of paper and well above what most small offices go through on a daily basis. The printer's multi-purpose tray supports printing to overhead transparencies, envelopes, mailing labels, 3" by 5" index cards, and banners as long as 47.24", while the main tray can print to documents sized between 4.1" by 5.8" and 8.5" by 14", as well as a second tray measuring between 5.8" by 8.3" and 8.5" by 14". The multi-purpose tray supports printing to documents sized between 3" by 5" and 8.5" by 47.24".
The C6000 ships with Print Supervision and the OkiLAN embedded web server for networking and job administration. It also includes emulation support for PCL 5c and PostScript 3, ensuring that documents that require PostScript 3 support, such as PDFs, will appear normally and without distortions when reproduced. The printer includes 85 scalable PCL fonts, 136 PostScript fonts, and OCR-A and B PCL Bitmap fonts, in addition to USPS ZIP barcode support.
Officially supported operating systems include Windows 98, Me, 2000, Server 2003, XP, NT 4, and Vista, as well as Mac OS 9 and X (from 10.1 onward). The C6000 interfaces with computers via either the 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet port or USB 2.0.
The C6000 ships with 256 MB of RAM standard, which can be expanded to 512 MB if desired to speed up printing jobs, particularly image-heavy ones.
Users report that the printer struggles with graphics prints, with blacks not being dark enough in a number of instances, as well as issues with printing on glossy paper without suffering from streaking, especially when producing color prints.
