OkiData C710 review
Fast, compact, and expandable, the OkiData C710 is a fast color laser printer designed for mid-size workgroups. Its feature set includes a number of options not available on many earlier models, such as full job security and encryption, and environments that don't require the features of an MFP will likely be more than pleased by it.
The C710 measures 17.1" by 23.9" by 15.3" and weighs 60.7 lbs, consistent with almost all other desktop color laser printers. The printer's weight and height will be increased by adding the optional 530-sheet paper trays, but in either its stock or fully expanded conditions it will likely fit comfortably on a desktop or tabletop alongside other equipment; it will also fit on a dedicated cabinet or credenza if desired.
The C710 produces documents at a maximum speed of 30 pages per minute in color and 32 pages per minute in black and white, better than the standard 20 pages per minute offered by many of its predecessors though somewhat slower than the contemporary MFP speed of 40 to 60 sheets per minute. It prints pages at a maximum resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi and uses HD color printing for maximum image quality, with a time to first page of 9 seconds in color and 8 seconds in black and white, much better than many models manufactured 5-10 years ago.
The printer includes a 530 sheet letter, legal, and universal-compatible main tray capable of printing to documents sized between 5.8" by 8.3" and 8.5" by 14" and a 100 sheet multi-purpose tray capable of printing to overhead transparencies, envelopes, mailing label stock, and banners measuring between 3" by 5" and 8.5" by 48". Duplex printing is possible on documents sized between 5.8" by 8.3" and 8.5" by 14". Two more 530 sheet paper trays can be installed to bring the printer's total capacity up to 1690 sheets, over 3 reams of paper and well over what most small offices go through on a daily basis.
The C710 includes substantive font support. It emulates PCL 6, PCL 5c, and PostScript 3 and includes 80 PCL and 136 PostScript fonts, with PCL bitmap support for OCR-A and B, as well as USPS, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 39, and Code 128 barcodes.
The C710 supports printing to Windows 2000, Server 2003, XP, Vista, and 7, as well as Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X from 10.2 onward. Linux and Unix are also supported. In non-network environments the printer interfaces with systems via either USB 2.0 or IEEE-1284 Parallel.
The printer supports networking via TCP/IP, NetWare, or Ethertalk via 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet. It includes support for PIN/password-protected prints, AES 256-bit encryption, secure erasing, IP address filtering, MAC filtering, SNMP v3, SSL/TLS, IPP over SSL/TLS, email authentication, and protocol lockouts, as well as job tracking by individual or department and control of access to color print jobs, though some of these features require the optional 40 GB hard drive for optimum function.
The printer ships with 256 MB of RAM standard, which can be expanded to 768 MB and augmented by adding a 40 GB hard drive to speed up jobs and add security functions.
Many newer printers, instead of using hard drives, which are prone to failure and can be tedious to replace, offer support for SD memory cards as large as 16 GB, proving far easier for many network environments to maintain.
Like many color laser printers, the C710 suffers from average photo print quality, a consequence of its low resolution. Users who intend on using the printer largely for color photos will almost definitely want to choose a photo-ready inkjet over this model.
