How do tricolor ink cartridges work? Inkjet printers heat up the ink from your cartridge, and then "jet" fine dots of liquid ink onto paper. Tricolor ink cartridges contain cyan, magenta and yellow inks and combine them to reproduce the full color spectrum.

When do I Replace an Ink Cartridge in the HP PhotoSmart p1000 Printer?

Under normal conditions, an installed ink cartridge should be replaced when its ink level drops under 10%. You can check the estimated ink levels of all installed ink cartridges by clicking the [Estimated Ink Level] tab in the HP ToolBox. Please note that a nearly empty ink cartridge can cause various print-quality problems, such as:

Inconsistent colors
Missing colors
Vertical and/or horizontal streaks
Wrong colors

Therefore, you should replace the ink cartridges installed in your HP PhotoSmart p1000 Printer if print quality is unsatisfactory. Please print a test page before replacing the cartridges. To print a test page, you must press and hold down the [Tools] button until the message [Print a test page?] appears, and then press the [OK/Yes] button. The complete ink-cartridge replacement procedure is included below.

How to Install an Ink Cartridge in the HP PhotoSmart p1000 Printer

You must make sure that your HP PhotoSmart p1000 Printer is turned on, and then open the top cover. Once the cartridge holder stops moving, you must lift the cover of the slot where the exhausted ink cartridge is installed, and then remove the exhausted cartridge by pulling it towards you. After that, you must unpack the new ink cartridge, and then remove the protective tape by pulling the plastic tab away from the cartridge. Please do not touch the ink nozzles or the copper contacts of the new ink cartridge. In the next step of the replacement procedure, you must insert the new ink cartridge into the empty slot, and then push the cartridge forward until it clicks into place. Now, you must close the cover of the slot, and then close the top cover. Finally, you must load a stack of plain paper into the input tray, and then press the [OK/Yes] button.
