AL-1631 DRUM

Sharp AL-1631 Drum Unit - 18000 Pages (Sharp AL1631 Drum)

Price:  $60.89

Product Description
Sharp AL-1631 Drum Unit - 18000 Pages (Sharp AL1631 Drum)

This Drum is good for printing 18000 pages, on average. Average page coverage is 5% of toner per page (compared to white space on the paper), which is the standard Sharp specification for this drum, and a standard measuring term for the consumer printing industry.

This product comes with a 6 month Warranty against any defects (including free replacement). We stand behind our products 100%, as these are not manufactured by Sharp.

What's the difference between a drum and a toner cartridge? A toner cartridge is just that: a cartridge that contains toner. The drum does all the work.

Sharp AL-1631 - Replacing a Drum Cartridge

After about 18,000 printed copies, the drum unit for this copy machine is no longer useful. An indicator light will turn on when the machine’s drum counter reaches about 17,000 copies, meaning that the drum can still be used about a thousand more times. This should give users plenty of time to order a new one, so it is not completely necessary to keep a spare drum unit on hand. The indicator light will, at some point, begin to blink. When this happens, the copy machine will no longer allow users to make copies.

The multi purpose bypass tray, side cover, and front cover of the machine must all be opened IN THE ORDER LISTED in order to gain access to the drum unit. In order to remove the drum unit, the toner cartridge must first be removed. To remove the cartridge, press the lock release lever on the end of the unit and pull it straight out of the machine.

With the toner cartridge placed safely aside, the drum unit can be pulled free of the machine by its handle. Recycle the old drum cartridge but do not throw away the toner cartridge unless it is empty.
Unwrap a new drum cartridge and peel off the protective cover from the cartridge. DO NOT peel off this cover until right before the cartridge is installed. This cover protects the drum from the light and once it is removed the unit must never be held in direct sunlight. It is also important to never touch the surface of the drum.

Slide the drum unit into place, followed by the toner cartridge, making sure that the toner cartridge snaps into position. Close the front cover the side cover and the drum indicator light will go out while the START indicator will light.

Sharp AL-1631 Review

Overview:

Discontinued in 2007, the Sharp AL-1631 is a remnant of an era where multifunctional copy machines operated at half the speed that they do today. The unit comes with many of the features and functions that are still familiar, but simply cannot keep up with what one might currently find on the shelves.

Pros:

The black and white Sharp AL-1631 desktop copy machine has a respectably large document glass that, for some reason, is 10 inches x 14 inches in dimension. The unit can of course only print to a maximum of 8.5 x 14 inch, or Letter sized, paper, but the large document glass could potentially come in handy when scanning oddly shaped objects and paper.

The unit is equipped with a built in automatic document feeder that, while relatively slow, can hold a solid 30 sheets of material at one time. Basic copy functions are active in the printer and include reduction and enlargement. Zoom levels can be adjusted by single percentages at a time between the range of 25 – 400%. Six preset zoom levels are also selectable at the touch of a button.

Paper storage is not atrocious for the little Sharp AL-1631, which comes with a standard 250 sheet paper tray and a 50 sheet bypass tray with automatic feed capacity. Scanning resolution is another element that falls in the “acceptable” cateogory with 256 levels of shading and a 600 x 600 dot per inch output quality.

Cons:

With a maximum copy speed of 16 pages per minute for Letter sized paper, the Sharp AL-1631 is sluggish by today’s standards. Its print speed tops out at only 16 ppm as well, making it about half as fast as desktop laser printers currently for sale. The unit is also severely lacking in other areas such as maximum monthly print volume.

With a maximum monthly duty cycle of only 5k pages, the Sharp AL-1631 is not even close to capable of printing in high volume, and is therefore best for an individual user or an office setting where copying is not a common task. Continuous copies can be made in amounts of up to 99 at once, but the unit is truly not designed to handle heavy work loads.

First page out times are slow for the device regardless of if the unit is warmed up or not. In normal copying mode, the unit can spit out a first copy page in just barely under ten seconds, but it takes a solid 16 seconds when copying from warm up mode. Thankfully, the device only takes 23 seconds to warm up, so it can at least be left off when not in use.

The Sharp AL-1631 is a little large for what it is capable of, with dimensions of 20.4 x 19.4 x 15 inches (W x D x H). Its weight of about 42 pounds is also on the heftier side of things. As the unit has long been discontinued, users will have much trouble getting warranties honored or even finding tech support for this rapidly aging copy machine.
