The drum unit’s current count as well as the total count of the copy machine can be checked by pressing the MENU key and then using the arrow keys and ENTER key to select the TOTAL COUNT option from the menu. The arrow keys can then be used to see statistics for the machine including the remaining drum life. (Other statistics include the amount of total output, copies, SPF usage, 2 sided prints, prints, and scans.)
The exact number of copies that the Sharp AL-1655’s drum is made to withstand is 18,000. When the machine reaches this number on its counter, the message REPLACE THE DRUM CARTRIDGE will appear and the unit will cease to function.
NOTE: The Sharp AL-1655 automatically resets its drum count upon installation of a new drum.
Begin drum replacement by following the procedure for replacing a toner cartridge, being sure to open the bypass tray, side cover, and front cover in the correct order. The toner cartridge, once removed, should be kept in a dark area until the new drum in installed.
The old drum cartridge can simply by pulled out of the machine by its handle, making room for the new one. New drum units must have their protective cover removed before installation. It is imperative that you do not touch the sensitive area under the drum cover or expose it to direct sunlight; this is why it is best to only remove the cover immediately before installation.
Slide the new drum into place and reinstall the toner cartridge as detailed in the toner replacement procedure. Close the front cover, side cover, and bypass tray. The drum counter will reset and any drum related messages will disappear, allowing for copying to continue.
