Upon initial setup of the Sharp AL-2040CS the piece of CAUTION tape must be removed from the front cover of the device. Additionally, two protective pins will need to be removed from the fusing unit. To access the fusing unit, open the side cover by pressing on the OPEN button. Behind the side cover the two protective pins will be seen and can be removed by pulling on the attached strings.
To access the toner compartment, the front cover must also be opened by pressing on both sides of the cover. If an empty cartridge is in place, remove it by pressing on the button located on the end of the cartridge. This will release it from the machine and allow it to be pulled free.
NOTE: Never dispose of toner cartridges by burning them, this could cause an explosion. Instead, store the cartridge in a disposable plastic bag and recycle it.
With the toner compartment empty, open a new cartridge and shake it from side to side several times. This will redistribute the toner inside and allow it to flow freely. Occasionally, when the toner indicator light comes on, the cartridge can be removed and shaken in this way to extend the life of the cartridge. If this method does not work, replace the cartridge.
Remove the protective cover from the toner cartridge but do not touch the area under the cover. Immediately slide the cartridge into its position in the machine and press the lock button to lock it into place.
The front cover can now be closed, followed by the side cover and bypass tray if necessary. Any indicator lights should go out and the machine will now be operational.
