Refilling the Sharp AR-337 Toner Supply

There are several warnings regarding toner that will appear from time to time on the Sharp AR-337’s display screen. The TONER REPLENISHMENT IN PROGRESS message means only that the toner inside is being cycled and replenished, not that the machine is out of toner. When TONER SUPPLY IS LOW. PRESS i FOR MORE GUIDANCE appears, it is almost time to change the toner and a cartridge should be ordered if there is not currently one on hand. ADD TONER. PRESS i FOR GUIDANCE means that the machine is completely out of toner and can not continue to function until more toner is added.

The Sharp AR-337 does not accept toner in the same way that most machines in the category do in the form of a replaceable cartridge, but instead receives toner in a bottle like cartridge that is used to fill the machine and can then be discarded. To begin this process, open the front cover of the machine.

A locking mechanism will be seen holding the unit’s toner hopper in place. This lock can be pulled downwards, allowing the toner hopper to be pulled outwards. The hopper will not come out of the machine but simply slide out far enough so that toner can be added.

Unpack a new toner cartridge and hold it vertically with the opening downwards. Tap the toner cartridge five times or more to unsettle the toner contained inside the bottle. Follow this by shaking the cartridge up and down vertically twenty times or more. Flip the cartridge upside down and repeat the process. After the toner has been shaken and tapped, it should be able to flow freely into the machine.

To feed the toner into the copy machine, align the cartridge’s tabs with the groves in the toner hopper, then lock it into place by sliding it to the right until it stops. HOLD THE TONER CARTRIDGE with one hand and carefully slide out the sealing tape, allowing the toner to fall into the machine. Tap the cartridge on top to assist in the flow. It should take about 50 seconds for the cartridge to drain completely.

Once the toner cartridge has been thoroughly drained, slide it back to the left to unlock it. Toner should not spill out because the gate on the cartridge will automatically close. Recycle the toner cartridge in any standard plastic recycling bin.

Replace the toner hopper back in its original position and be sure to lock it into place by lifting the lock lever. The front cover can now be closed and the machine operated.

Sharp AR-337 - Copying to Transparency Film

The Sharp AR-337 is compatible with transparencies, but they must be loaded through the bypass try and programmed properly. Begin by placing any originals in the document glass or ADF the same way you would when making a regular copy, then use the following button sequence:

1) Press SPECIAL MODES.
2) Press TRANSPARENCY INSERTS.
3) If printing to insert sheets, press YES.
4) Press the upper OK button.

Load the transparency film into the bypass try and make sure the tray selected for insert sheets is the right one for the transparency in use. Make any other changes and press the dedicated START button. To make more than one copy, replace an original with the next and press START. When finished press the READ-END button.

Sharp AR-337 Review

Overview:

With a 33 page per minute print speed and respectable options in terms of expandability, the Sharp AR-337 is a mid sized document processing unit that could suit a small office as a desktop copier just as well as it could a large office as a floor standing, network ready document station.

Pros:

Cranking out 33 pages per minute when printing and copying, the Sharp AR-337 is almost as competitive in the area of performance now as it was the day it was released. Its expandability options include an enormous 3,000 sheet large capacity tray that sits in position next to the device as opposed to attaching underneath it, and a Fiery print controller is available as a separate unit as well.

On top of an overall fast print speed, the unit also boasts a first copy out time of only 5.2 seconds, making it a great choice for those who often need to churn out a quick reproduction and get back to work. Its warm up time of 65 seconds is a little longer than one would hope, but is still within acceptable parameters for a machine of this size.

Standard paper supply comes in the form of two 500 sheet drawers that are accompanied by a third 50 sheet drawer that is intended primarily as a bypass tray to be used for special media types outside of the usual Letter and Legal sizes of paper. In its out of box form, the Sharp AR-337 can be used as a desktop copier, be it a large one. When additional paper storage options are included, such as extra 500 sheet drawers, then the available stand should be set in place and the devices used as a floor standing machine.

The Sharp AR-337 accepts paper sizes ranging all the way up to 11 x 17 inch Tabloid size, as well as standard Letter and Legal sizes. Also compatible with the unit are special media types such as card stock, envelopes, and transparencies. These irregular types can be loaded into the bypass tray and printed to without unloading the usual paper supply.

A 4.3 GB hard drive is included in the unit and the additional memory allows users to create and store data in individualized folders. Input material can be scanned directly to an inbox instead of a PC and then accessed later for very quick printing. The hard drive is also supplemented with RAM memory for basic digital print and copy operations.

Cons:

The age of the Sharp AR-337, unfortunately, means that its compatibility with current software becomes more and more of a problem as time passes. The device’s display screen is primitive in comparison to the touch screens seen on the market today, and availability of parts will also soon become an issue. While the device can certainly perform in many aspects just as well as other machines on the market, it lacks some of the bells and whistles available today, such as PictBridge compatibility and print from phone technology, and the units age will only become more of a problem as time passes.
