Sharp MX-2700N Review
Driven by a powerful 600 MHz processor, the Sharp MX-2700N full color document system is as fast as it is versatile, giving offices the ability to print, copy, and even fax quickly and efficiently in color as well as monochrome.
The large touch screen present on the Sharp MX-2700N helps users to navigate through its extensive set of features that include innovative document filing, Sharp OSA compatibility, inbound routing, and an array of copy functions.
With color copy speeds resting at a respectable 23 copies per minute and color print speeds boosted up to 27 pages per minute, the Sharp MX-2700N is at least competitively fast when it comes to raw color laser printing performance. The unit is also capable of printing to large format 11 x 17 inch paper, though at slower print and copy speeds.
First copy out times are not spectacular, but at least sufficient at 6.3 seconds for black and white and 8.9 seconds for color when using the platen document glass. The device is also fully equipped with an automatic document feeder that can crank out first copy out times of 8.8 seconds for black and white and 13.9 seconds for color.
The printer and copier elements of the Sharp MX-2700N each have their own designated memory supplies, and are both extensive in this category. The copy machine is allotted 768 total MBs of RAM while printing and network scanning get their own 640 MBs. Additional memory can be added as well for better handling of complex color print material.
One of the more thorough areas of the Sharp MX-2700N setup is security. Several layers of passwords and authentication processes can be programmed for every aspect of the device. A secure fax release feature keeps all incoming faxes in memory until an authorized member with the correct PIN code unlocks them. Network scanning access can be set up to protect the network from unauthorized e mails and secure socket layer (SSL) encryption, IP/MAC address filtering, protocol enabling/disabling, and port management are all fully present functions in this device. Additionally, confidential printing can be used the same way as secure faxes; requiring a PIN to active a print.
The Sharp MX-2700N only scans at a maximum optical resolution of 600 x 600 dots per inch. While this is acceptable for all types of text copying, it limits the device’s usefulness as an image scanner. The unit is, arguably, a copy machine, but having a higher quality scanner couldn’t hurt its appeal as a versatile, top end piece of hardware.
The fact that the unit is a full color machine makes a low scan resolution even more heartbreaking. While its color copy function is unique, copying photographic imagery in any sort of retained photo quality is out of the question.
Other nitpicky downsides can be found to this otherwise extensive piece of hardware as well. Its warm up time of 80 seconds is questionable considering the cost of the unit, but the overall less than impressive speed of the device does not negate its color document handling capabilities.
