How to Check the Ink Cartridge Statuses on an Epson Stylus Photo R1900 InkJet Printer

The Epson Stylus Photo R1900 will alert users when one of its many ink cartridges is running low or has completely run out. When the droplet shaped ink light flashes, at least one of the cartridges is running low and it is time to order new ink. Once the ink light stays on, one of the cartridges has to be replaced before printing can continue. The computer screen will also display a warning message.

Because there are so many cartridges in use in the Epson Stylus Photo R1900, it is wise to check the status of these cartridges manually on occasion. To do so, double click the printer icon on your Windows computer and cartridge icons will be displayed with their estimated ink levels. One a Mac system, open APPLICATIONS, then the EPSON PRINTER UTILITY2. Select the SP R1900 and a status screen will appear.

The cartridges used for the printer are photo black T0871, matte black T0878, cyan T0872, magenta T0873, yellow T0874, red T0877, orange T0879, and gloss T0870. Remember that any one of these cartridges may be out of ink and the printer will not be able to print unless it is changed.

How to Replace the Ink Cartridges in an Epson Stylus Photo R1900 InkJet Printer

Make sure that the printer is on and that there is no roll paper or canvas loaded at the time before opening the printer. Press the INK button and the cartridge holder will move into the access position. Cartridges that need to be replaced will have a light above them lit or flashing.

Open the cartridge cover to gain access to the cartridges. Determine the ones that need replacing and squeeze the tabs on the front and back of each cartridge to release them from the machine. Pull the empty cartridges out and recycle them.

New cartridges must be shaken around several times to loosen the ink inside before they are removed from their packaging. Once opened, you must also peel off the yellow tape from the cartridge, but do not peel off any of the other seals or touch the GREEN chip on the side of the cartridge.

Find the proper place for the cartridge and push it into place until it clicks into position. When all cartridges are in place, close the cartridge cover so that it clicks as well and then close the printer cover. Press the INK button to begin the charging process which will take longer than 2 minutes.

Solving Common Printer Problems with the Epson Stylus Photo R1900 InkJet Printer

User error is commonly the cause of printing problems and it is best to double check if paper is loaded correctly before assuming that a mechanical problem has occurred. Be sure that the input paper is loaded with its printable side facing up and its short edge first with its right side up against the edge guide. Never overload paper above the visible arrow mark inside the sheet feeder. Load a single piece of paper at a time when using the single sheet guide. If the paper light is flashing, be sure that the printer cover is closed as an open cover will cease the printing process.
