HP LaserJet 3055 Review
The HP LaserJet 3055 is a versatile black and white laser printer combined with the functions of a color scanner, copier and fax machine, all in one easy to manage, space saving package. USB and Ethernet connectivity provide simple small office and home office integrations. This machine is designed for the individual or company in need of a wide range of features with as little cost as possible. Bottom lines are kept low with reduced asset value and low consumable costs.
A maximum print speed of 19 pages per minute is a respectable rate for this and other comparable models that have scanning and faxing capabilities integrated. The first page out time is less than 8 seconds, shortening wait times on one page document requests. A top resolution of 1,200 x 1,200 dots per inch yields a high-quality black and white text document output that will rival that of other multi-function printers in its class, producing crisp, clear results that are presentable for invoices, checks, memos, letters and other professional business documents. HP's unique resolution enhancement technology gives print job quality the extra oomph that edges out the competition. A super G3, 33.6Kbps fax modem is equipped which, when combined with data compression methods, can transmit faxed documents at a rate of three seconds per page. A number of fax features come standard with this model which ensure that faxes that are sent and received are done so in a secure manner and that the chances of a lost transmission are reduced by features such as fax delay and fax forwarding. A small dimensional footprint is a space saver and Ethernet networking capabilities further reduce the cost and resources needed for a small office or business to use the features that this machine has to offer. Low power consumption makes this model another in a long line of HP printers that are Energy Star compliant.
HP rates the monthly duty cycle for this unit at up to 7,000 pages and a recommended monthly print volume of 500 to 2,000 pages which, compared to the robustness of comparable models made by other manufacturers, is considerably lower than the competition. This is due in part to the integrated scanning and copying capabilities that can take an extra toll on the mechanism over a relatively short period of time. There are no upgrade capabilities in this model and no variations of installed features and services. The unit comes with the maximum amount of functions and capacities available right out of the box, limiting the possibility of extending the usefulness of this machine through changes and improvements in office technology. Standard input capacity is up to 260 sheets of paper, which can be used up pretty quickly when multiple users are routing printing, scanning, copying and fax functions through one machine. On-board printer RAM memory is a fixed, non-expandable 64 MB, which can be taxed when multiple requests are sent to the unit from multiple sources at once. The automatic document feeder fits sheets of paper very loosely and can easily skew pages and feed multiples at once. Also, with continued use, the automatic feed mechanism becomes sloppy and will often cause pages that are to be scanned to not be placed fully on the bed, resulting in unwanted truncation and cropping. The maximum scan size for the flat bed is only 8.5" x 11.7" making scanning of legal size documents cumbersome and time consuming, as they have to be scanned twice for the whole document to be captured. This produces a very non-professional result. |
