Lexmark X7170 Review

Overview:

Despite the Lexmark X7170’s particularly attractive, space age design, its slow print speeds and overall mediocre specifications make it a less than desirable four in one color printer. While some bargain multifunctional units deliver a lot of bang for the buck, the flimsy hardware that the X7170 consists of reflects the device’s cheap price, making it less of a value.

Pros:

It truly is worth nothing the Lexmark X7170’s aesthetic appeal, as it does have a very particular look that is sure to attract buyers that are concerned with that sort of thing. The unit is not without its practical elements as well, combining print, copy, scan, and fax abilities into a single, reasonably sized machine.

Along with the hardware included in box, the Lexmark X7170 printer comes with a productivity suite that makes it easy to organize and search documents. The software allows users to convert documents to PDF files and vice versa, as well as edit documents and printed material. Multiple file types can be dragged and dropped for one time printing, allowing users to print a variety of different types of material quicker than usual.

As a full color printer, it is great to see a true 4800 x 1200 dot per inch print resolution setting that allows for, more or less, photo quality color printing. Glossy paper is, as expected, compatible with the Lexmark X7170 for superior color image print quality.

Basic copy functions found in the Lexmark X7170 are made possible by the unit’s flatbed design and built in memory. Reduction and enlargement ratios of 25 – 400% allow users to squeeze two or four pages worth of input material onto a single page of output. Up to 99 copies can be made at a time from a single source as well and if more are required the process can be repeated with a single touch.

Faxing is made possible by the device’s built in 33.6 Kbps fax modem as well as a set of easy to use dedicated keys. Up to 100 pages worth of fax data can be stored internally in the event of a paper outage or the like so that incoming faxes are not lost when they cannot be printed to a hard format immediately. Caller ID and group dialing are only a couple of the other features this well equipped fax machine in outfitted with.

Cons:

The Lexmark X7170 is packaged with some very shoddy scan software, making it difficult to execute basic PC scans. Its output quality is also inconsistent; a tell tale sign of cheap print hardware. The overall print speed of the unit is also disappointing with 22 pages per minute being the maximum black and white performance level. Color printing can only be done at an even slower 15 pages per minute, making the device significantly slower than the multifunctional units you would find on the shelves today.

The unit’s copy speeds are very similar, yet slightly slower and equally as disappointing. The black and white copy speed still operates at about 22 pages per minute, but color copies get dropped down to only 14 pages per minute.
