How to Check and Replace the Ink Cartridges in an Epson Stylus Photo R220 InkJet Printer Printer

The red light next to the droplet shaped ink icon will blink when one or more of the cartridges currently in use in the Epson Stylus Photo R220 is beginning to run low on ink. When this light is blinking, it is time to order new ink as one of the cartridges will run out soon, thus ceasing operation of the printer. The light will eventually stay on, indicating that the printer needs replacement of an ink cartridge or cartridges to continue printing. If even one of the device’s cartridges is out, the printer will not function.

The device’s ink can also be checked manually via a connected computer. On a Windows system, double click the printer icon in the taskbar and a window with cartridge levels will pop up. On a mac, choose APPLICATIONS > EPSON PRINTER UTILITY > SR R200 SERIES > EPSON STATUS MONITOR to bring up the status window.

To remove old ink cartridges and install new ones, begin with the printer ON and open the printer cover. Press the INK button. This will move the cartridges under a slashed out droplet icon to indicate which cartridge needs replacement. If more than one cartridge must be changed, pressing the INK button again will move a different cartridge under the icon. When all empty cartridges have been pointed out, the cartridge holder will slide into the position for replacement after the INK button is pressed.

Lift up the cartridge cover to gain access to the cartridges. Determine which colors need immediate replacement and remove them by pressing their release tabs on the back and front of the cartridges and pulling them away from the machine. Recycle old cartridges properly.

To install a new cartridge or cartridges, unwrap them from their packaging but be careful to never touch the GREEN chip on the sides of the cartridges. Lower them down into their proper colored positions, then press down on the cartridges until they snap firmly into position.

Close the cartridge cover on top of the cartridges and then close the printer cover. Press the ink button once to begin the charging process, which should only take about 30 seconds to complete.

How to Clean an Epson Stylus Photo R220 InkJet Printer Printer

The Epson Stylus Photo R220 printer should be cleaned at least twice a year and at best once a month, especially under heavy use. It is a good idea to clean your printer every time a cartridge is changed. Always clean the printer with the power turned off and unplug all cords as well, including the power cord and USB cords.

Take all the paper out of the printer but leave the cartridges installed. Using a soft brush, clean the sheet feeder and, if the inside of the feeder is dirty, a damp cloth may be used as well. Also use a damp cloth or one soaked with a mild detergent to clean the outer casing of the printer, but it should not be so wet that any droplets get inside the machine as this could easily cause damage.

Wipe any ink inside the printer with a damp cloth as well, and wipe all other areas with a dry, soft cloth to remove dust. The inside of the printer does not need to be spotless, only clean enough for safe operation.
