How to Replace an Ink Cartridge in the Epson WorkForce 600

The Epson WorkForce 600 makes it very clear it its users when it is time to replace an ink cartridge. The LCD screen on the printer will display the message YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE FOLLOWING INK CARTRIDGE(S), followed by a list of the cartridges that require replacement. The printer will not function if even one cartridge is completely out of ink.

Be sure to have new cartridges on hand before beginning the replacement procedure as cartridges must be installed right after removing old ones. Never open cartridges until just before installation, thus protecting them from the open air.

Begin replacement with the printer turned on. If you receive a low cartridge warning, you can still print until a cartridge has run completely out of ink, but it is time to order a new set of ink. If you wish to replace cartridges before one of them is empty to prepare for a large print job or for any other reason, the printer must first be prepared for cartridge replacement.

To prep the printer, press HOME, then choose SETUP>MAINTENANCE>INK CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT, using the OK button to choose. Open the scanner to access the cartridge holder and open the cover on the holder as well.

Cartridges can be released from the machine by pressing on the tabs found on each end of the cartridge and lifting them out of the machine. Pack up old cartridges as they may leak and recycle them.

Prepare a new cartridge by shaking it around a few times to stir up the ink inside it. Take it out of its packaging AFTER shaking it and be careful to never touch the sensitive GREEN chip on the side of the cartridge. Take off the yellow seal from the cartridge but leave all other seals intact or the cartridge will leak.

Insert the new cartridge into its proper position in the printer and press down on it until it clicks into place. Do this for each cartridge you wish to replace. When finished, close the cartridge cover and the scanner and press OK. Charging the ink will take about 2 minutes before the printer can be used.

Printing a Test Page with the Epson WorkForce 600

Usually when printing problems occur it is due to faulty ink cartridges, but sometimes the print nozzles themselves are out of line or clogged. To check them, you must print a test page onto letter sized paper. Press HOME and then choose SETUP>MAINTENANCE>NOZZLE CHECK and press START.

A nozzle pattern will print out and should not feature any gaps in the lines on the pattern. If there are no gaps but printing is light, select FINISH NOZZLE CHECK, press OK, and replace the ink cartridges. If gaps do appear, simply choose HEAD CLEANING and press OK and then the START button.

How to Clean the Print Head on an Epson WorkForce 600

The print head can also be cleaned without running a nozzle check by loading letter sized paper into the machine and pressing the HOME button. Next, choose SETUP>MAINTENANCE>HEAD CLEANING and press OK and then START. It will take the unit about 2 full minutes to clean the heads and then it is advised to print a nozzle test page. If cleaning the head does not solve a print problem, it is time to change the ink cartridges as they are probably just too old to operate.
