When do I Replace an Ink Cartridge (Pen) in the HP DesignJet 650c Wide Format InkJet Printer?

The HP DesignJet 650c Wide Format InkJet Printer is equipped with four ink cartridges (Pens). You can check the ink levels by looking at the ink-level indicators on the front of the ink cartridges. You should replace the installed ink cartridges in the following circumstances:

An ink-level indicator(s) is black – The corresponding ink cartridge is at the end of its useful life. You should install a new [Color] ink cartridge. Please be aware that your HP DesignJet 650c Wide Format InkJet Printer cannot operate if the Black ink cartridge is empty.

Printout is blank

The vertical lines on the printout look jagged/uneven

Light and/or dark bands appear on the printout

The solid areas of the printout have pronounced banding

The following error code [@PJL USTATUS TIMEDCODE=40011] is displayed – The HP DesignJet 650c Wide Format InkJet Printer has detected a faulty/damaged ink cartridge. Please reinstall the ink cartridges one by one to find the faulty/damaged ink cartridge. A new ink cartridge of the corresponding color must be installed.

[Wrong pen type] is displayed – You have installed an incompatible ink cartridge(s). Please replace the specified ink cartridge with a new, supported one.

[Service pens] is displayed – You must make sure that all ink cartridges are installed correctly, and then check if the message is still displayed. Please install a new ink cartridge set if the problem persists.

[Replace pen(s)] – The indicated ink cartridge has clogged nozzle, or it has reached the end of its useful life. The specified ink cartridge must be replaced. The complete replacement procedure is included below.

How to Install an Ink Cartridge (Pen) in the HP DesignJet 650c Wide Format InkJet Printer

Important: The ink cartridge nozzles may clog if the ink cartridge is left out of the printer for more than a few minutes (after unpacking). Please do not touch, wipe, or attempt to clean the ink cartridge nozzles or contacts.

Initially, you must make sure that your HP DesignJet 650c Wide Format InkJet Printer is turned on, and then press the [Access Pens] button. Please wait for the ink cartridge carriage to stop moving. After that, you must open the print compartment cover and the cover of the carriage, and then unlock the exhausted ink cartridge by pushing it gently down. Now, you must remove the exhausted ink cartridge by pulling it towards you, and then take the new ink cartridge out of the plastic bag. In the next step, you must remove the colored protective tape and tab from the new ink cartridge, and then insert the new component into the corresponding slot of the carriage. Once the new ink cartridge is inserted, you must press it gently down and push it toward the machine until you hear a click. Finally, you must load paper into the input tray, and then close the print compartment cover. Please note that the HP DesignJet 650c Wide Format InkJet Printer aligns the ink cartridges automatically.

Overview:

The HP Designjet 650C is an outstanding printer. The unit requires a lot of space, but it is an excellent option for printing blueprints and other large documents. Output quality is of the highest standards. Separate toner cartridges help to reduce printing costs.

Pros:

The HP DesignJet 650c offers many outstanding options. This unit supports a variety of media types including coated, glossy, and plain paper. The output tray can catch large media as it comes out.
Print quality is decent for most needs. This unit delivers a resolution of 600 X 600 dpi. The 4 MB of installed RAM might not be enough for larger projects, but memory can be added if needed.
The unit uses four different colors of ink which include black, yellow, magenta, and cyan. The Designjet 650C ink cartridges can even be replaced while printing, to minimize downtime.
This unit is reasonably priced and is an excellent choice if you need a wide-format inkjet printer. Best of all, the unit is easy to operate and comes with an easy to use control panel.

Cons:

This unit can only be connected using serial and parallel ports. It also takes up a lot of space measuring 47.2x54x28 inches and weighing 153.9 pounds. The HP DesignJet 650c also lacks faxing capabilities.
