Canon MultiPASS C5500 Review

Overview:

 The Canon MultiPASS C5500 is a multifunction bubble jet printer which includes other document solution features such as faxing, copying, and scanning. The C5500 is capable of printing good and clean copies and boasts of its ease to operate.

Pros:

 The Canon MultiPASS C5500 is an all-in-one machine, its ease of use make it perfect for small offices and home use. The C5500 weighs 12.3 lbs and has dimensions of 15.8” x 14.2” x 8.1” making it suitable for office use. The C5000 uses 120 V 60 H outlets for power and consumes approximately 30 W during operation and 8 W on standby. This all-in-one printer operates optimally between temperatures of 41 – 90.5 degrees Fahrenheit. During operation, the Canon MultiPASS C5500 emits sound of 47 dB(A) and 35 dB(A) during standby.

The C5500 prints good quality pictures and texts using Canon’s bubble jet ink-on-demand technology. It can print black documents using the BC-20 compatible ink cartridge at a rate of 6.5 pages per minute while color prints take a bit longer to process at 2.5 pages per minute. Printing resolution for the Canon MultiPASS C5500 printer is 720 x 360 dpi for both black and color documents.

The printer is able to print on a different array of paper types like Banner Paper, Back Print Film, Brilliant White Paper, Fabric Sheets, Greeting Cards, High Gloss Film, High Resolution Paper, Transparencies and T-Shirt Transfers. The printer supports sizes of these different paper types of Letter, Legal, A4, US #10, and European Envelopes. The Canon MultiPASS C5500 handles these automatically or manually while printing.

The C5500, being a multifunction machine, can also copy documents. The C5500’s copier can copy a page up to 3 minutes with a copy resolution of 360 x 360 dpi on mono color 256-grayscale documents. The copier can also reduce the pages to 70%, 80%, and 90% of the original size.

Different documents with size 8.5” x 39.3” or less are scanned with a resolution of up to 600 dpi, 300 dpi for optical scanning. The Canon MultiPASS C5500 is capable of producing quality scans of black and color documents.

The fax feature of the C5500 uses the Public Switched Telephone Network to transmit data with G3 compatibility. It also uses MH, MR, ECM, MMR data compression systems. The modem is able to transmit data at approximately 6 seconds per page at 14.4 Kbps, although there are slower modem speeds like 9600, 7200, 4800, and 2400 bps. The fax resolution is rated at 203 x 196 dpi for Fine Mode and 203 x 98 in Standard Mode. Printing incoming faxes can take up to 4 pages per minute, but ultimately depends on the current receiving speed of the modem.

The Canon MultiPASS C5500 fax comes with an automatic speed dial that can save up to 6 locations and coded speed dialing for 50 different locations. It also has a group dialing feature and sequential broadcast to up to 57 locations. Automatic receiving, non-ring reception, ECM and Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection are among the other features of the C5500 fax.

Cons:

 As with other bubble jet printers, the Canon MultiPASS C5500 uses a lot of ink. In addition, the bubble jet ink cartridges are small and with the way the printer uses the ink it empties the catridges fast. The drivers of the MultiPASS C5500 are not compatible with Windows XP systems. If you have a system running on XP and are having trouble installing the C5500, do not be alarmed.
