Canon ImageCLASS MF7470 Review

Overview:

The Canon imageCLASS MF7470 offers all of the features of the MF7460, but is fully networked.  Duplex printing, copying, scanning, and faxing are all in a single desktop package. Supporting up to 11” x 17” ledger-size paper, the multi-function can print at 1200 x 1200 dpi quality, at speeds of up to 26 pages per minute. 

Pros:

Starting at 128 pounds with a 25” x 26” footprint, the hefty imageCLASS MF7470 takes up the same space as many stand-alone laser printers.  Placed on any table or it’s optional stand brings the MF7470’s to a comfortable height for someone standing next to it to manually making copies or scans.

The control panel gives a person full control of copy, fax, and scanning features without the need to use a computer. The panel consists of a touch-screen display, a 10-key pad for copies, and the traditional buttons for printing and copying functions.

After a 26 second warm-up, print jobs can start as fast as 7 seconds at speeds up to 26ppm.  Printing in monochrome at 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution, the multifunction keeps text sharp--even at 6-point font sizes--and does a decent job with printing graphics in B&W.

This Canon has two sliding paper trays; both can handle 250 sheets of 11 x 17” paper. The two-tray feature is especially nice in an office where legal and standard size papers are often used. Non-standard sizes and heavier media can be used up to 80 sheets placed using the multi-purpose flip-tray on the side of the copier.

The MF7470 uses an 11” x 17” platen to support scanning up to legal size single documents and books.  The automatic document feeder allows for scanning up to 50 originals in sizes up to the 11” x 17” ledger.

The scanner feature can digitize 24-bit color images with a maximum resolution of 300 x 300 dpi. Images can be saved in one of the popular formats: JPEG, TIFF, or PDF.  Up to 50 11” x 17” pages can be scanned using the ADF.

As a copier, the 50-sheet ADF and the duplex features allow you to save on paper by having creating two-sided copies out of single-sided originals. The ImageCLASS multifunction has three different copy exposure modes to handle from text to photo reproductions. The magnification can be automatically or manually changed from 50% to 200% in 1% increments, or in 7 pre-set “jumps”.  Single-sided copies can be made at speeds up to 26 pages per minute. Maximum copy resolution is less than the printer, but 1200 x 600 dpi with 256-levels of grey is good for a copier.

Using a 33.6Kbps modem (Super G3), the fax function can send up to 20 pages per minute. The control panel can store up to 200 phone numbers for 1-touch speed dialing and 2-button dialing for up to 300 more. Up to 1,000 incoming and outgoing faxes can be stored in the MF7470’s memory. Fax resolutions can be set from the Standard to Photo to 203 x 391 dpi Super Fine resolution.

Canon is very generous when it comes to memory in its imageCLASS line, and the MF7470 is no exception. Boasting 256MB of undependable RAM, the all-in-one can easily support the demands of a network printer.  Built-in Ethernet enables faxes and scans to also be saved directly to computers.

Canon has provided software to support not only Microsoft’s but Apple’s operating system as well to allow fax and scan functions to be accessible via a computer.

Cons:

Canon does not offer PCL or PostScript emulation with the MF7470.  Instead the ImageClass comes with Canon’s UFR II-LT emulator.  Some Mac users running OS X 10.6 have experienced problems with this driver.  Lack of PostScript will only be noticeable by heavy Adobe users.
