Brother MFC-990CW Review
With a built in 4.2 inch touch screen, navigating through the Brother MFC-990CW’s print, scan, copy, and fax options is both fast and simple. The unit incorporates so many hardware functions into a single, wireless ready device, it is sure to keep any small business’ printing needs met.
The Brother MFC-990CW proves itself as a truly all in one machine by including hardware luxuries such as a built in cordless handset and answering machine, making the device perfect for the compact home office. While the unit is not designed for particularly high volume usage, it should prove to be more than enough hardware for any individual user. The built in touch screen is backlit and incorporates digital shortcut features that make navigating through custom print options easier than ever. The angle on the screen can be adjusted and it can also be used to preview digital photos in full color with the help of built in memory card slots. Connectivity options include USB, wired networking, and wireless networking, making the Brother MFC-990CW one of the easiest to operate multifunctional units available. It also is capable of functioning as a stand alone unit thanks to features such as PictBridge compatibility that allows digital cameras to be linked directly with the device for photo printing without the use of a host PC. Also included is Bluetooth wireless compatibility which allows Bluetooth ready handheld devices to print photos and documents quickly and easilty.
The Brother MFC-990CW, being an extremely compact device, suffers from a certain degree of cramming issues, such as the very inconveniently placed paper output tray. Tucked in under the bottom side of the front of the unit, smaller output media is difficult to fish out from within the machine. In an odd move, Brother chose to incorporate the USB and LAN ports inside the machine, making it awkward to connect these cords. Luckily, the Brother MFC-990CW comes with built in wi fi capabilities, so wireless connectivity is a sensible option. With so many features included in a single device, one would expect a high price tag on the Brother MFC-990CW, and the device lives up to the expectation. While lower end multifunctional units ofter come at costs under a hundred dollars, the 990CW was released at a price of well over two hundred dollars. For users who do not require the extensive hardware set that the unit carries, a more stripped down device may be preferable. Probably the biggest gripe that one could have with the Brother MFC-990CW is its print speed. While the unit is capable of printing in stunning photo quality, it actually is one of the slowest modern MFCs on the market today, and much slower than its competitors. |
