Canon PIXMA iP4820 Review

Overview:

Canon had decided to add, yet, another printer to its PIXMA iP4000 series; the Canon PIXMA iP4820.  The Canon PIXMA iP4820 possesses the capability to churn-out high-quality photos with unparalleled performance.  The sleek, compact design lets the printer sit comfortably anywhere in the home or office.   Compared to its predecessors, the PIXMA iP4820 model facilitates higher-end capabilities.  As printer technology ascends, and so does Canon's PIXMA iP4000 series.  This is a solid choice for students, photographers, home users, scrapbooking, and graphic artists.

Pros:

Generally, the more ink cartridges utilized within a printer; the capacity of handling complex photos is increased.  Unlike text-printers, a highly concentrated photo printer will utilize a minimum of 6-ink cartridges.  The Canon PIXMA iP4820 model is the embodiment of a text and photo printer with its 5-ink system.  With superior resolution of 9600 x 2400 dots per inch, the ChromaLife100+ preserves the quality of photos for up to 300 years.  Black resolution is a simple 600 x 600 dots per inch.  With the resolution, for Black and color both, users find balance in the isolated photo printer.  The iP4820 facilitates the use of Bluetooth adapters.

Black text documents will print 11 images per minute, 9.3 images per minute in color, and 4 x 6 borderless photos in 20 seconds.  There are 512 nozzles for black printheads, and a total of 4,096 nozzles for color printheads.  As apparent, the color prints are the focus of its FINE technology, which, dishes out ink droplets at 5, 2, and 1 picoliters.  The PictBridge enables individuals to utilize their camera, camcorder, or mobile phone to print images directly from the device.  Interesting thing about this printer is that one does not require a computer to operate it.  Modern operating systems like Windows Vista, 7, and XP work with the printer.  Mac OS X versions 10.4.11-10.6 is a wider range, compared to the printers predecessor, but will work with the printer, nevertheless.  Canon offers a standard limited 1-year warranty for the printer. 

Acceptable media sizes are Letter, 5 x 7 inches, 4 x 6 inches, 8 x 10 inches, Letter, and U.S. #10 Envelopes.  The printer handles various types of media in plain, super-high gloss, semi-gloss, matte, glossy, and envelopes.  While printing, the printer is only 46.5 decibels.  Which is only around the noise-level of a loud whisper.  Compact at 17.0 inches in depth, 11.7 inches in width, 6.0 inches in height, and 12.6 pounds; the printer will fit upon any credenza or stand.  The printer earned the Energy Star credentials as it operates at 17-Watts and stands by at 1.1-Watts.

The printer should prove to be easy-to-install with a few clicks on dialog boxes.  Canon offers a Solution Center software that will assist on creative projects like posters and calendars.  The HD Movie Print software is relatively new for the printer series.  It allows end-users to pull still-pictures form movies and print them out.  It is pretty cool to have the ability to pull-out favorite scenes from movies and print them on paper/photos.  The paper handling is a generous 2 150-paper tray.  The thick media go in the back, and the plain papers go to the front.  The output will automatically unfold the tray when you begin printing.  Its automatic-duplexing feature will print on both sides of a document and save paper, thus, reducing paper-usage.  Using plain-paper mode will reduce the ink-usage, as opposed to the Fine mode that produces optimized results with more ink-usage.  The Auto Photo Fix 2 will adjust and correct any abnormalities located in photos before printing.  Great thing about it, it is practically a hands-free task in photo-editing.  The bottom-line of this printer is it expands artistic capabilities as a cost-effective solution.

Cons:

Basically, it is a hit-and-miss when one gets the printer that produces orange, faded tints on a photo-plain paper documents.  The printer's control panel consists of a simple on/off button.  Most users would like to see an intuitive LCD.  While the printer is an integrated text and photo device, it lacks in fundamental office features like scan, copy, and fax.  There are not any memory card slots and does not facilitate hard disk memory storage.  Basically, you have to wing it as you produce photos.  The printer may work slower on Mac computers than Windows-based computers.
