Overview:

Though Brother may be slightly exaggerating when they refer to their Brother MFC-620CN as a 7 in 1 device, the unit does offer a surprising amount of hardware built into a single, reasonably sized device. Printing, faxing, copying, and scanning are all made possible by the unit, as well as a series of secondary features such as PC faxing and message recording that round out the units all inclusive features set.

Pros:

With print speeds of up to 20 pages per minute in black and white and 15 pages per minute in color, the Brother MFC-620CN is not the fastest inkjet on the market, but it does well when dealing in smaller volumes. Its strength instead lies in its photo quality resolution and borderless print options. With print quality selectable up to 6,000 x 1,200 dots per inch, the unit can produce lab quality results in quantities of up to 2,500 printed pages per month.

Compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems, this 16 MB system can store up to 80 auto dial locations in memory, along with up to 400 pages worth of fax data. Copy functions lag behind print speeds slightly with rates of 17 copies per minute in black and up to 11 pages per minute in color. Various copy functions are accessible through a comprehensive series of dedicated controls found on the front of the unit, making it a veritable stand alone copy machine. Scan functions rate very highly as well with a maximum optical scan resolution of 600 x 2400 dots per inch and interpolated scan quality of 19,200 dpi.

Cons:

Before Brother upgraded their MFC line of multifunctional units to Super G3 fax modems, the devices were limited to speeds of 14.4 Kbps. The Brother MFC-620CN is consequently much slower at transmitting and receiving faxes than its newer counterparts, and executes faxes at a rate of six seconds per page, which can be as much as three times slower than current models.

The unit’s built in automatic document feeder is also limited in that it has a maximum page capacity of only 10 sheets. An on board ADF is always a welcome feature for those looking to fax and scan multiple pages without having to manually feed individual pages, but this unit’s limited capacity leaves much to be desired. Its output paper capacity is also quite small at 25 sheets, which helps to assist the device in keeping a very low profile, but also is less than ideal for high volume printing and copying.
