Brother MFC-640CW Review
With wireless print capabilities build into an already extensive hardware set, the Brother MFC-640CW stands out as one of the easiest ways to add a large amount of functionality to a small office or home at a very low price. Print, copy, scan, and fax functions are all apparent in this versatile unit, along with additional convenience features such as built in media slots, a message center, and a corded handset.
While corded handset telephones have more or less gone the way of the dinosaur when it comes to multifunctional devices, the Brother MFC-640CW’s built in phone can prove to be very useful for those dealing with a very small home office work situation. One of the main advantages of having an all in one device is the conservations of space they utilize, and throwing in a telephone with the package only boosts this aspect of the device.
The unit is a capable stand alone copy and fax machine, but is also more than suited for full color photo quality printing. With resolutions of up to 6000 x 1200 dots per inch, the Brother MFC-640CW produces lab quality results at very affordable costs. With an array of built in media slots, users are not even required to connect to a computer to upload and print photographs with the device.
With a maximum monthly duty cycle of 2,500 printed pages and a standard input paper capacity of only 100 sheets, the Brother MFC-640CW is not exactly suited for heavy volume printing. It is, however, an excellent choice for everyday household or desktop printing needs thanks to its competitive 20 page per minute monochrome print speed and 15 page per minute color print speed. The device is one that definitely does not excel in any one particular category, but truly shines as a piece of hardware that has managed to combine five or six appliances into one.
The Brother MFC-640CW is now discontinued, and has already begun to show signs of its age. While cost conscious buyers could surely take advantage of the current bargain prices for the printer, its limited modem speeds and RAM will weigh them down some. With only 16 MBs of standard random access memory, fax features such as an 80 number phone book and 400 page fax memory are evident in the unit, but full color prints will suffer severe slowdown.
The device’s fax modem speed carries the same problem with it. A dated 14.4 Kbps fax speed means that fax transmissions and receptions will operate at speed two and even three times slower than current devices, which run at around two or three seconds per page. |
