Xerox WorkCentre PE120 - Replacing a Toner Cartridge

Replacing a worn out toner cartridge for the Xerox WorkCentre PE120 is simple and straightforward. The machine itself will alert users when the cartridge is out of toner with a TONER EMPTY message displayed on the LCD. Once this message appears, the printer will no longer function until a new cartridge is installed.

To replace the cartridge, open the front door by grabbing the small handle located on the front of the machine and swinging the door downward. Push DOWN on the cartridge’s handle and then pull it straight out of the machine. Old cartridges should be recycled and stored in a plastic bag to prevent them from leaking toner and potentially causing stains.

Unpack a new cartridge only immediately before it is to be installed. To prep a new cartridge for installation, shake it thoroughly in every direction to distribute the interior toner. If toner from the old or new cartridge gets onto clothing, wash it with COLD water as warm water will cause a permanent stain.

Never make contact with the underside of the cartridge but instead always handle it by its sides or handle. To insider the cartridge, line its guide tabs up with the rails inside the printer and slowly insert it into the device. If installed properly, the cartridge will lock into position. At this point the door to the printer can be closed and a test page should be printed to ensure that the installation was successful.

Xerox WorkCentre PE120 - Making Copies Using the Scanner Glass

Copies and scans of single page and three dimensional input material can be executed by using the Xerox WorkCentre PE120’s flip top cover and document glass. To make a copy, first lift the cover and expose the document glass. Place the input material FACE DOWN onto the glass, being sure to line it up with the guide in the top left corner of the scanner.

No documents can be in the ADF when using the scan glass. If there is input material in the ADF when attempting a single page copy, the ADF will take priority over the glass. When possible, do not leave the cover to the glass open while making a copy, but do not force the cover closed when copying a three dimensional object as this could crack the document glass. As a rule of thumb, only input material 30 mm or thinner should have the document cover closed completely onto it.

Once the copy material is in place, close the cover to the glass. At this point, copy settings can be fully customized by using the dedicated controls. To clear all custom settings, press the STOP/CLEAR button. When you have set the settings properly, press the START button to begin copying.

Xerox WorkCentre PE120 - Making Copies Using the Automatic Document Feeder

Similarly to the scanner glass, copies can be made on the Xerox WorkCentre PE120 via its built in automatic document feeder. When loading the document feeder, always load input material FACE UP and in quantities of no more than 50 SHEETS.

Make sure that the document guides on the sides of the input tray are fitted against the input material. If they are not, simply adjust them so that they touch the sides of the paper.

At this point, copy settings can be adjusted by using the dedicated control panel and LCD screen. Once settings are properly set, press the START button to begin the copy process.

Xerox WorkCentre PE120 Review

Overview:

When performance takes priority over price, turn to one of Xerox’s higher end small multifunctional units like the Xerox WorkCentre PE120 to deliver considerable speed and quality, just be prepared to pay for it.

Pros:

Though quite spendy and, being discontinued, is now a questionable purchase for most businesses that wish to remain on the cutting edge of the paper handling world, the Xerox WorkCentre PE120 is still quite relevant thanks to its delivery of remarkable print, copy, scan, and fax functions.

Many of the unit’s specifications are up to par, as expected, such as its paper supply that consists of a 250 sheet tray that is coupled with a nicely sized 50 sheet multipurpose tray. With two trays available, multipurpose paper can not only be loaded into the machine in multiples, but it can also be accessed without disruption of the regular paper supply. The unit is in fact expandable, though only by a single tray that can boost the paper supply by 250 sheets.

A nicely sized 50 sheet automatic document feeder also sits atop this highly fax friendly unit that comes with the standard 33.6 Kbps so commonly seen in these types of devices. Faxes can be sent at speeds of around 20 pages per minute with the help of the ADF, while the unit’s scanning functions are notable as well.

Scanning can be done at optical resolutions of up to 600 x 1200 dots per inch which, while not ideal for photo scanning, is considerably better than the 600 x 600 dot per inch capabilities seen in many other similar devices from this era.

The device’s first page out time of 10 seconds is acceptable, while time saving on board features such as “scan once print many” technology will also be sure to keep the speed of business moving when using the MFP. Scanning (and printing as well) can also be done to the larger Letter sized paper format along with Legal, and with a USB connection users can access the printer’s scan to function.

Cons:

The unit does not come network ready which, at its list price, is a bit questionable. It was, admittedly, released in 2007 and is now discontinued, but even second hand bargain hunters should be wary of this overpriced device. Xerox did offer a Xerox WorkCentre PE120i version of the device that came with built in Ethernet, but buyers of the non “i” model are left in the cold when it comes to multiple PC connectivity.

The device also underperforms considerably in a variety of areas, including duty. For a self proclaimed “high end” unit, the Xerox WorkCentre PE120’s maximum monthly duty cycle of only 15,000 pages is not acceptable. Memory included is also a bit sparse at only 32 MBs. An additional 128 MBs can be added to unit to remedy this problem, though at a fairly high cost.

Ultimately, the Xerox WorkCentre PE120’s major downfall is its price to performance ratio. With the cost of this type of technology constantly dropping, shoppers are better off investing their money in a newer, faster MFP.
