Lexmark X4270 Review

For those who prefer the old school top loading fax machine hardware style for their multifunctional unit over the current standard flatbed style but also want the ability to print and copy in full color, there is always the unique Lexmark X4270 color inkjet fax machine. This fairly affordable device combines basic facsimile hardware with color inkjet print abilities, resulting in a unit that is suited for the buyer who simply does not want to work with a document glass.

The Lexmark X4270’s light 9 pound weight places it easily on the smaller side of four in one devices, though it is over 20 inches wide. With full dimensions of 20.4 x 11.7 x 7.3 inches (W x D x H), the device will easily fit on most desktops and, as it is not a network ready unit, is best for personal use. Unfortunately, when the units paper trays are unfolded its depth grows to more than 20 inches and its height increases by about 4 inches, making it a little less dimension friendly.

The control panel on the Lexmark X4270 consists of quite a few dedicated buttons, which actually makes the device very easy to operate as a stand alone machine. Its built in 33.6 Kbps fax modem allows the device to transfer data at a rate of about 3 seconds per page, while built in memory allows features such as a permanent phone book to be stored permanently.

One thing that top loading fax machines have that most flatbed units do not is a corded handset. While the era of cell phones has seriously diminished the amount of phone handsets that are included as part of print hardware, the Lexmark X4270 unapologetically flaunts its telephone and cord, which is actually a great luxury for those who keep the device on their desk and use a land line. Automatic switching keeps fax transmissions and phone calls from getting jumbled, while caller ID allows users to identify incoming calls before picking up.

Lexmark advertises the Lexmark X4270’s print speeds as 19 pages per minute for black and 10 pages per minute for color, which are already less than mediocre. On top of this, the device (like all Lexmarks) severely underperforms its listed speeds, making it a fairly overall poor printer.

It’s not that the Lexmark X4270 is only equipped with 16 MBs of RAM, it’s that it lacks memory expansion options that really disappoints. Without any possibility to improve the unit’s low random access memory capacity, the device will not handle complex print and fax material without noticeable slowdown.

A gripe that is all too common on devices in the less expensive category is an unlit LCD screen. As a unit that relies heavily on its LCD to communicate information regarding faxes, it is a pretty big disappointment to have one that is hard to read. Another jab that has to be thrown at the Lexmark X4270 is its complete lack of Mac support, as it is exclusively a Windows compatible machine.
