Lexmark X502N Review
Built with the same guts as the Lexmark X500, the Lexmark X502N converts the color laser print hardware into a fully functional all in one machine. Unfortunately this relatively old color 4 in 1 suffers from all the same drawbacks as the single function version, and is therefore much slower and lower performing than similar hardware that has been released more recently.
The Lexmark X502N’s output tray has a 250 sheet maximum capacity that matches that of its input capacity, unless an additional paper tray is installed. One 530 sheet extra paper tray can be incorporated into the hardware to bring the unit’s total paper storage capacity up to a full 780 sheets while also allowing the device to have two separate types of paper loaded at once. Unfortunately, the Lexmark X502N’s complete lack of a special media slot or straight through paper path makes the unit incompatible with many special media types. Special paper types that are compatible, such as transparencies, can be loaded directly into the 250 sheet tray. The automatic document feeder that sits atop the device holds a maximum of 35 sheets of input.
Four pass color print technology has gone extinct for a reason. The Lexmark X502N’s four pass print system results in an overall color print speed that is significantly slower than that of single pass color units. Each of the four color toner cartridges must make its own pass over the page to produce a full color result, which means that printing in color takes four times as long as a printer’s black and white print speed.
